    Default Neutral for jets?

    Has anyone come up with anything besides a Jet-A-Way to disengage the pump? Would installing a clutch and converting to a splined shaft work on just a weekend cruiser?

    I have had the same question and the only thing I can say is Top fuel dragsters are set up this way why cant a boat be? If you have the room I dont se why tyoy couldnt put some type of hyd. throwout bearing on it and a clutch and do this.

    I kind of doubt you could do it in less than teh 4" or so a jetaway takes... and at what ammount of complexity and wear ammounts.

    Where do you put the "clutch pedal"?

    You can do anything you want, pretty much. As to whether it's an improvement, do it and find out? Good luck to ya.

    The Jetaway is not intended to be a "neutral", that's just a side bennefit to it's original design as a racing safety device.

    I would make it all hydrolic and use a switch on the steering wheel.

    Very few high performance clutch assemlies take up more than 3 inches. It could be done. The bell housing to accomodate the clutch would in fact take up more than 4 inches, but thats less of a concern.

    I think the problem would be coming up with a clutch disc that would work on a jet pump shaft(could be wrong) I dont think you would want to reduce the shaft size especially with big hp. A hydraulic cylinder operated throwout bearing setup would not be difficult to dream up.

    Yes, it will work. I've driven one set up that way. It was a hydraulic activated set up. I could never see the logic in adding that much weight to a boat just to be able to push in a clutch though.

    That's what I was thinking, at least as far as a 'neutral' in the water with the motor running. With a 'Rams Head' Bucket at the right angle, partially open, partially close it would seem to me that one could effect a 'neutral', no forward motion, for a day cruiser in the water. Mark the bucket control handle for the 'neutral' position and there you have 'it'. I know that doesn't help out of the water, but .....
