    Default Impellers!

    My impeller has two markings on it. It looks like it used to be an A2 and is now an AB. What is the difference between an A2 and a standard A? Why would they have started with the bigger A2 to turn it down to the much smaller B? Why not start with an A? Is an A2 turned down to a B a good thing, performance wise. Secondly, it also has an H stamped into it. What is this H? Do all Berkeley impellers have this H stamped into them or is mine just special? And finally, do the holes that naturally occur in the cast aluminum impellers affect the flow in any significant way? Should I be concerned about filling them with some epoxy or something. Thank you.

    Default impellers

    most all impellers start life as the bigger size because of the cost to produce the molds that they are made from. the difference from an a2 to a smaller size is the amount that is turned off the outer diameter. as towhich size is better is determined by many factors especially your boat weight and size and horsepower and your intended use. i believe the h is the prefix used on most berkeley part numbers.

    an ab means it's cut halfway between the a and b diameter. the vanes that are cut are on the discharge side, the end not shown in the pics.
    not sure what holes you're talking about; maybe the balance shots???

    berkeley impellers aren't cut that way, amt and dominator are. what's the large diameter (across the impeller, from the edge of the vane at the bottom of the pic to the same edge on the other side), and what's the small diameter (from top of the vane as pictured to the top of the vane on the other side)?

    I really don't know if it is a Berkeley. I just assumed that it started as a Berkeley. Several years ago the whole pump was sent off (by the previous owner) to one of these jet pump performance shops (sorry I don't know which one) and they did some work to the pump. I was told he spent about $2,000 on the pump work, but I do not know the exact amount. The owner couldn't remember the name of the place or even what state. But this is just what I was told, I don't know if any of it is true or not.

    I will get those dimensions for you. I would like to find out as much as I can about this impeller. I have lots more pictures if anyone wants to see something else on it, including close ups. Thank you.

    look at the bottom drawing for an example of large and small diameter. the measurements are for sizing a dominator impeller. sizing measurements for other impellers are different, but you get the drift. some have the large diameter cut back, while others (berkeley) do not, and only reduce the small diameter.

    Ok, here are the dimensions off the impeller blades. The small (top) diameter is 7.130" and the larger (bottom) diameter is somewhere around 8 1/2", I had to measure it with a tape measure. Sorry couldn't get an exact measurement off the large diameter, I only had my 8" calipers with me. I will get a better dimension tomorrow with my bigger mics. But based on my rough numbers and the numbers on the chart above, my impeller should be an AC. Thank you.

    So is it a Dominator impeller or a Berkeley impeller? Is a Dominator a better impeller? Thank you.

    the diameter's you quoted don't match any impeller sized to any manufacturer's specifications, amt, dominator, berk, or the other one's. with the large diameter cut that small, it's at least a B-, if not a C.

    better??? it's aluminum...
