    Default 418 Race recap

Never did my race recap cause I've been busy as hell but here goes.

Left for Ming Friday morning untested other than some dyno time and was anxious as hell about everything. Got to the the track and setup the pit real quick and started working on the boat right away. We had alot of loose ends and some on the trailer testing to do to make sure everything was working as planned. So we are testing the nitrous timers and solenoids etc. and things are acting up a little, half way through our testing we leak a little nitrous into the plenum and grenaded the top of the manifold off the motor. NICE!! Banged up the scoop tray and everything else in the process. We are looking at the motor and the carbs are hanging off the manifold and broken pieces everywhere and I'm thinking we are a done deal. After a while we start investigating everything and find that everything is fine except the top plate so right away Harold Bruce JR. and Tiki track down their buddy Luckie Stiff from Bakersfield and he goes and buys a piece of 1/4" alum from a metal shop and he picks me up at the track. He takes me to about 5 different machine shops to get this thing made and nobody wants anything to do with it. Finally we find a shop and they hack one out for us real quick (2-3 hours) for $63 (thats all I had on me at the time) and got us up and running again. Those guys were super cool and stayed late on a Friday to help get us going again. Ingall Machine in Bako, can't say enough about those guys..

Here is a pic of the guy cutting out the top plate for us.

    Pic of the carnage

So anyways we get the thing running Friday night and finish everything Sat morning and at this point Im pretty bummed out on things and dont have the best feeling about our whole deal but everything is fixed so we put it in the water to see what she will do and we run our best ever 7.82/133 MPH on a medium tune up.. I cant explain how good that felt, it was all worth it!. I was doing late nights for the last 3 weeks finishing the motor, dynoed the Sat before the race and thrashed all week to get it in the boat and all hooked up (no time to test) made the scoop tray and rope guard Thursday night and left Friday morning. Thrashing to say the least. We look at the computer after the run and spot some obvious things off the line that need work so we get into some of that and figure its time to start tuning for 8.0 class so we back the nitrous way off and run the nitrous to just past half track and run a 7.86, we picked up over half a tenth to the 1/8th with the stuff we changed off the line and the thing was pulling real hard, next lap we back it way down and run around 8.15 but it slowed down more than it should have and I knew something was wrong, fooled around the rest of the day trying for 8.0s but only managed I think an 8.12 which put us in the number 5 spot and Number 3 in UBFJ with the 7.82. Studied the data alot but couldnt put my finger on the problem, engine checked out fine and we just assumed it was the air or water conditions that slowed us down. Sunday morning we find a damaged jet-drive part and had to run our spare which was pretty rough but it got us through the weekend. Sunday was a pretty smooth day other than a minor elec. problem and a bad fuel pressure regulator..Most of our data from Sat went out the window cause we changed the pump Sunday but we did the best we could and had a blast.

We went a few rounds in both classes, ended up runner up in
UBFJ to Mike D. and went out in 8.0's against Widowmaker who put a killer lap together at 8.05 and took the win. Anyways thanks to everyone who helped out, Jordan, Robert Jonssson, Hustler, RCB19, Gordy at Pfaffs for dynoing the engine on a weekend, John at C&J for hustling to get me some carbs, MPD for loaner impeller, Jeff Smith for the loaner canopy, My Mom and Shannon for keeping the boat clean and the crew fed and the list goes on and on..Alot of people help us do this and I really appreciate all the help.

    See ya in April.

    Few random pics below

Not sure what we are doing here but thats me, Jordan, some of the 509 guys and Buzby on Sat morning I think. Robert Jonsson by the boat.

Nice shot with DK behind you. I have to see that boat.

Oh yeah.....Holy crap on the Nos BaNG. Wow.

Glad you got her back together.

Edit: BTW ...Two carbs ?????? ( are for people who need a crutch) what's that worth ET or your best HP guess ? Can't believe the throttle blades were okay. You looking for a burst plate now ? will probably never happen again now.

Dang! Bet that skeered the hell out of ya when that went off. Hate to see that happen.
Sounds like you got passed it and made some damn nice runs though.
    Way to go.

    Thanks.

I was more than burnt out on the single 4 setup, it worked good and everything I just need a change every few years I guess. Couldnt tell ya how much it picked up but it probably got me 20-30 HP Id say. The carbs are big 4150's.

Ive always ran a burst plate and never had a problem with nitrous, this time I did not have them and had an issue, go figure. I did make the manifold top plate out of cast tooling plate just for this reason and I think it worked as planned, everything was fine except the top plate, it took the blow of the impact. I still dont think the vent holes on the nitrous burst panels are anywhere near big enough to vent enough for a big boomer, the holes are only about an inch in diameter and the spring loaded deal opens less than 1/2". I like the style on the superchagers much better. I never open the bottle before the engine is running, this was a freak deal I'm thinking. I will try to incorporate some burst panels or make my own before next race.

Chris, glad I was able to help, sorry about the mini tour of Bakersfield machine shops, figures that everyone was busy or heading home on the day we needed them to stay late. Nice numbers btw on the first pass from Saturday. Boat looked good all weekend. See you in April, you're buying the beer.

PS- If any of you NJBA guys ever need anything, I live here, I know a shitload of people and can usually get whatever you need to make it through the weekend or make it home.

    20-30 hp ??????????( Hummmmmmmmmmmm)

I have a friend with a 580"er with two large 4150's that thing is crisp !!!!

The blower burst panels are nice I'm sure you can figure out how to incorporate one on your T/R that will look trick.

The more I look at that picture with DK it looks like you're racing an illusion. That is so cooooooool. ( what did he name that boat? )

Good luck this year with your program sounds like you're off to a good start.
