    Default RUH ROH RAGGY!! timing.

So i decided to toss out the points mallory ignition system and upgrade to a msd pro billet and 6al box. I picked it all up for someone for $200 only has a few hrs on it.

What i found out when i got it home is the distributer has been locked out. No advance weights or springs.

Im assuming i can set my timing at 32* and be good.. But from experiance to much advance when starting can lead to cranking issues.

    ideas anyone?

pros and cons to locked out timing??

Default do you pull tubers or skiers?

Locked out timing sometimes makes for problems with smooth acceleration for pulling weenies on tubes or for pulling skiers.
Thats the only con I can think of off the top of my head.

I used to run propane which has a very high octane so I could advance my timing far more than I should with out detonation. It was hell on the starter. When the crank is turning at the speed of the starter and the piston fires it tries to push the piston backwards. When the engine was warmed up it would about stall the starter. I even used a high torque pricey starter.

Other than that it ran perfectly. I believe that they are usually at full advance around 2000-2500 rpm anyway so with a jet I would think that it shouldn't matter.

you should be fine locked out, Id run it. MSD makes a deal called a starter saver where it retards the timing when its under 800 RPM. Its a start retard and they work. Even if your pulling weenies on tubes you should be fine, my .02.

Many years ago in the sprint car days. When we wanted to fire up in the garage no starter on the car so we would take the gears out of the rearend and attach a plate with a starter on it. It would spin a bit slow and the engine was big compression alcohol locked out mag.

The engine builder came over one day and called me an idiot for retarding the mag so it would start. lmao I was an aircraft mecxhanic and our mags had a retard device built in for starting. I need to remind him of that. and see if he still thinks it's idiotic.

Man, other than starting the engine, I can't think of a reason not to lock out the distributor in a performance application...

I if were to lock the dist. out where it makes the best hp i would either have to have and ig. cut off switch

(which i have..if for no other reason than to spin the motor over if has set for a week or longer)

just to get the motor to spin over or flood it slightly...timing stall is kinda hard on starters
Olds motors seem to like a lot of timing and don't seem prone to pre-ignition
    at lower RPM..

and while i haven't back checked it for sure but anything over 92 octane is just throwing money away and seemed to (seat of my pants)
run the best on 50/50 88/92 octane

probably best idea is MSD crank retard......my total timing is 38* and just messing around with it it will have a problem cranking @ 30* when warmed up

''Based on prior experience with big-block Olds engines, we expected a torque monster, and we weren't disappointed. With 38 degrees of total lead''

    car craft magazine engine build

    http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...nes/index.html

I have always run them in a car with 38 or at higher altitude a little more
The engine doesn't have a lot of compression and cold water in the heads
help to.....when in doubt, read the plugs...with olds motor if it has to much timing you can hear it misfire anyway
