Default Help with a used pump

    Hello all,
Just got a new/used boat through a buddy of mine.
It is an Ultra 21' Shadow deck boat with no motor or exhaust I need to check out the pump.
It has a 2003 Dominator 12S jet pump, A impeller and a hyd. place diverter. The packing glands are removed and I will need new nuts/bolts and packing for that, minor stuff there.
So I spun it over and it turns fine, no funny bearing noise or rumble pretty smooth, I noticed a little minor contact noise but I have worked around a number of PWC pumps and this is normal for them when clearence is good.
    They worked fine.
How do I tell if it is good without taking it apart or installing a motor and trying it out?
I will be installing my mild 350 hp 454, Imco exhaust and a 3 pt mount system soon.
I need more power as this is a heavy hull, but a 496 kit will have to wait....50-55 is fine for now.
Rather take the pump apart now than later....
My 1990 21' Daytona Jet is for sale in boat spam now less motor!!!
    Thanks for the help guys....

most of the insides of the pump cannot be view even with a bore scope. the only way to tell if the backside of the impellor or the inlet side of the bowl vanes and especially the impellor to wear ring clearance is ok is to dissassemble the pump for inspection. may not be what you want to hear but now is the time to do it, not a major deal to take apart.

I would get some good headers NOW. That way you have them for the new motor. I don't want to rain on your parade but with 350hp you are gonna hate your boat. Especially trying to pull skiers or tubers. You will be lucky to do 50. If you can try to find a baby blower and bolt it on. other wise DONT even bother trying to outrun a pontoon boat you will be "smoked". They are bitchen boats but they need better than average power. Welcome to the "stationwagon" club. JMO

    whew...
I knew it would be a little slow but hey don't try to sugar coat it or anything!! I needed a good laugh tonight!
This is the boat I wanted instead of my 03 Cheetah Fast Cat but it was 10k-15k more than the Cheetah in 03. I couldn't justify it for 3' less of a boat. Way better "Ultra" quality though.
That F/C boat only did 45-53 depending on load and outran a lot of pontoon boats. It had a 6.2 I/O mercruiser and was not underpowered at all. I have had 100MPH boats before so I can live with it for now.
I am going to rebuild the pump..I will give the motor a try as It runs good and I can live with 45-50 for now..
I will order new EMI exhaust I hear the Lightnings leak and they are way expensive.
I will post some pics. of the pump rebuild.

Hey dude I wish SOMEBODY would have told me the "TRUTH" upfront! I was told a 502 502 would do 75........ Yeah right. 500 hp will get you 60 to 65 if your pump is dialed. thats with 1 person in the boat with 10 gal gas. just being honest with you "UPFRONT" with real gps numbers. I was expecting it to run like a 21 daytona. they don't as you already know they are pigs.

    PS&B1,
You are right on the money from what I have heard...
I know a guy that bought one years ago and was dissapointed with top speed also. He had a HP motor built and saw 60-65 he was pissed and that boat was very expensive new...he sold it as a new baby was on the way anyhow...I have heard several stories on this hull.
With a 300X O/B they run 80 though. I know someone who has one.
I don't need to go that fast anymore....45-50 for now..
So a mild 496 with aluminum heads and 500-600 hp motor down the road
is my plan no blower or turbo, plus a wakeboard tower and big stereo....
    60-65 tops we will see.
Got to get this one on the water it needs some work.
Size is perfect for us though...24' was too big on the shallow lower river.
