Default Are these BBC heads any good?

    Howdy,

So after sitting in my boat pretending I was at the lake after going through my flooding carb issue, I pulled off a valve cover to see what kind of heads I am working with...

So, are these any good or are they severely limiting any potential of gaining horsepower in the future?

    Thanks!

Those heads are a low performance head made more for low speed RPM and torque from a Gen 5, if I remember correctly. I've never had a Gen 5 but from what I understand, there aren't too many parts that can swap between the Mk4 and Gen 6.

    Default Gen-6

if it's a low deck you can use anything -the timing gear cover is differnt and the oil pan is different

oops, I just read what I typed and I think I made it sound like parts can't be swapped between the Mk4 and the Gen 6.
thanks for setting it straight though, it's good to know.

    Default gen 6

oil pan and timing covers are different. as far as aftermarket fun, everything else will work on either. mark 4 cams will work in gen 6 too.

Those are "peanut" port heads, not for performance. Before you consider swapping heads, check the block casting number as the Gen 5 blocks are not good for putting MK IV or aftermarket heads on. Gen 6 works with better variety of heads.

Don't plan on just adding a different set of heads and gaining a bunch of power, the cam needs to match your application to make it all work

By the number on his heads, he has a Gen 5. Is everything interchangeable with the Gen 5 also?

Oh Goodness! I honestly did not realize there were so many differences from one BBC to another. Maybe I should have just stayed a Ford guy

That's not 100% true, as he correctly stated, the 156 casting was used on Gen 5 and Gen 6 blocks.

Also, as I stated above the Gen 5 does not like aftermarket or MK IV heads, there are water sealing issues.
