    Default knowledge needed

i have an 01 21 foot ultra with a fuel injected 496ho, berk pump, all the other standard stuff. i bought the boat about a year ago and i've been on the search to figure the boats #1 problem since i got it. here are the symptoms.

    1. after letting the boat warm up for a short time or a long time (20 minutes) being long, or after idling for an extended period through a no wake zone up to 30 min. the main issue is this. when i first go to get it up on plane it basically revs up a bit, cuts out for a second, revs back up, cuts out. it does this a few times until i just wait for it to get on plane then it's ok once on plane i can jump on it and it doesnt seem to have an issue.

    2. if i get through the first time of it having these symptoms, say to run up to an area, then throw a skier behind the boat, the symptoms aren't there.

I've had the boats computer remapped twice. symptoms are still there. i'm having some electrical issues with the boat as well around the ignition (key). those are going to be addressed this week by my mechanic. could electrical problems be a cause or is it more than likely a thermostat/ temperature issue.

thanks in advance for any help. this has been a pain in the ass the whole time and i'd like to avoid throwing heaps of money looking around at various solutions when maybe one of you guys out there has had this same experience. thanks again

Does it smoke like it loading up? What do the spark plugs look like?

when trying to get on plane the exhaust is white, not really smoking, looks normal. plugs were checked twice. seemed to be good to go by my mechanic

Good fuel and clean filters? No water in fuel? Base timing ok or is that DIS ignition?

brand new fuel, brand new filters. not sure about the timing. my mechanic out here in phoenix had it on his laptop monitoring the motor as it ran and thought it was cured.

Just curious if the Batteries have a positive shut off switch and if so are you turning it off between uses ? Tom

boats got a standard perko switch. #1, #2, or all are the slots for the switch. i turn it off between trips. i have a place on the river so i keep it on one battery over night at the dock for the bilge. other than that it's off when i'm not on the water. batteries are also charged between trips

electrical gremlins for sure unless it is running to hot it is not going to be a thermostat issue, the only thing i have see a engine comp due is if it is to cold running it derates the engine not cutting it out. the computer is seeing something it does not like, then falls back into parameters.it sounds like a engine speed sensor possibly it may be seeing the engine over rev kills the spark then gos again. what rpm is it hitting when you go to take off is it over the engines spec. if not this there must be a sensor going bad or wiring to a sensor, or the computer. with out the schematics on the motor you really a sitting duck out there even with a tech if he is not totally familiar with he engine your toast. ill tell you what i tell every one that has electrical problems either get a drawing or make a drawing of the hole system it will help you figure out what is happening and allow you to jump out circuits to see what is giving you the issue. is it a cable throttle or fly by wire? good luck

its definately not running too hot. the temp gauge has always been around 130 -145. i was told they generally run in that range. rpm wise, it's not outside of it's range. 4500 tops when i'm jumping on it. it's a bit of a heavy boat and takes a bit to get it on plane but 4500 is what it takes and it take a little while. would a complete rewire be a place to start? its that time of year when my kids want to go to the river a couple times a month so i need to get this thing figured out in a hurry. thanks to all who have offered advice. keep it coming. if it was your boat, where would you start?

When we saw you out there we thought maybe you had something stuck in your pump. Seemed like you were not moving when you hit it. Like some cavitation.

Maybe, like said above, you are hitting your rev limiter. Nice boat by the way.

cavitation could be happening. is there a reason it would happen the first time i try to get on plane and not after a bit of a run. when you heard it the other day those were the exact symptoms it produces every time i take the boat out. i could run down the lake a little and slowed down then it would of taken right off like there were no problems. how do i fix cavitation

OK what motor do you have in it year, make, model. these electronics are they stock to the motor? or is it a kit you put on it + model of kit? is it electronic ing as well? how many speed sensors does it have 0,1,2? for the cavatation when it does rev up before it dies they pump would be loaded does it could like the motor is loaded, and i dont see how it would fix itself. don't bother building another harness if you don't have schematics.

being fuel injected, does it have a knock sensor? try un plugging it see if the problem goes away. If it does.. time for new knock sensor.
