    Cause in most cases they arent

    That boat likely has a Hamilton style pump which are better even still at pumping garbage, but Berk/AT's etc are better at it than you think.....

    Mercury's are pretty good too

    Looks like a Hamilton Jet 773 or 753 Series 3 Stage pump and they usually run Brass or SS 17 pitch impellers with a solid rock grate. (Free finger grate is for sand and weed) The jet unit only allows a certain diameter rock through.

    Those pumps are built like a tank.

    Here is a pic of my restored unit powered by a 455 OLDS in a 16ft Javelin original Hamilton Hull.

    Its the only way to boat, once you've done it you're kinda "ruined" for other forms....
