    Default bowl oil problem

so i filled the bowl (one piece bowl) yesterday with 90wt gear oil, i noticed that most of it leaked out inside the bowl just behind the nozzle. So is this a blown bowl bearing or bowl seal?

Happened to me about a year after having my pump rebuilt...I believe a fishing line did it. I now pump in red grease. Zerk on each side till it comes out and then a couple pumps with a plug in the other side to get at shaft..I add every trip out. If your due for a rebuild, take care of it then.

I was wondering about the grease also. I just bought my first jet. Bowl has a plug on the left, and zerk on the right. I took it out for the first time, and noticed a little grease coming out of, and around the zerk. I was told they use gear oil????

Berkeley says 90 wt gear oil, thats what I added and then noticed the leak. I think im going to give the grease a try.

once you put greese in the bowl, its hard to ever get it cleaned out. you could just pull the bowl and replace the seal. if you can see it looking threw the nozzle then its probably just the plug.

I have one zerk that I put on when filling. I keep plugs in em after filling. Pump in till you see it coming out the other side then again on the other and put a plug in on the other side and give a couple more to ensure you got the shaft. I agree with adam about it being hard to get the grease out but jc bowls are a dime a dozen....If you are ready to start pulling your pump apart you might want to rebuild the whole thing. And if thats the case consider split bowl, wedges, droop, ect...

i unhooked the drive line from the motor and spun the pump. It was very smooth and made no noise at all. I did notice that when i turned the pump in the reverse direction that a bunch of water started coming out from the intake area.

If the oil is leaking out the rear of the bowl and into the nozzle as you fill it, you need to make sure the bowl end cap plug is in place. Looks like a big pointed screw head. If it is in place, you may have damage to the bowl. Any water that may have entered the oil reservoir around the bearings could have frozen in the winter and cracked the bowl.
