No need for a HV pump. I'm using a standard Melling and am getting about 80 psi at 4000...

You'll be fine. In my 502 with a mellings HV77 pump I have around 50 to 60 at idle and 80-90 at higher rpm.

unless you are running huge clearances there is no need to run that heavy of an oil. lighter synthetics make more power!and flow better. just so you know we run 0w20 in the drag boats. don't do that in a lake boat but 10w30 good syn oil (Lucas,mobil1 ) whatever, will do you just fine.

I have had great luck with standard volume pumps

Never seen the need for the HV

You really only need 10psi for every 1000rpm right?

a high volume is going to heat up the oil more as well if it is going over the relief it is going to gain heat just from that plus high pressure going to cause more heat.
