    Default olds tunnel ram question?

what have the results been like with running a tunnel ram on a mild 455 in a jet boat?

i have a f block 455 cast crank stock rods arp bolts in the mains and rods oil restrictor ect ect to make it live kb hypers ballanced ported polished Ka's comp 280 mag stick rollers about 9.5 to 1.... right now i am running an early egr torker 455 with a 2 inch open spacer with great results with a 780 vac 2ndary street avenger turns an AT A 5000 at 70 mph gps

i guess my question is with my small cam will a single carb TR be an improvement or will i go backwards? if you do think it will be an improvment will i want to go with a bigger carb? dual carb setup instead? i just like the look of the TR better.... even if there is no performance gain i would like it better just so long as i dont loose performance

    thanks dj

dont put a single carb on a tr, you will get problems with fuel distribution, jmo

yeah i never in a million years thought my junk a** old hull would every go 70 but i made a 69.8 mph pass with the headers injecting with me 1/2 load of fuel my tool box that i always keep in the boat anchor 5 life jackets fenders all my rope and rigging stuff and a group 29 battery i figure i could bail all the unnessecarys the passenger seat rear seat bottom run with 2 gallons of fuel and put a small honda battery in it and MABYE see 71 or 2

really i just want the look of the TR i still have an alum impy and dont want to over power or over speed it although it was brand new and mabye has 5 hours on it i still dont want to chance it....i am deffinatly going to put an add on shoe and ride plate on it when dwane gets some more in and mabye have my closed loader opened up a little or get a semi v blocker

but all in all do you think i will go slower with the TR because if soo i wont even think about it because i do have one hell of a setup rite now

i had a TR on my olds and it was pretty mild like yours and had no fuel distribution problems at all. I too liked the look, do whats best, if you do go with the TR make sure you monitor the plugs for too lean.

I added mine mine with headers and a ring and bearing job. so it was a lot better than with the torker I was running be for . I haven't had any fuel issues with a 750 cfm carb. It will look faster if nothing else.

yeah TR's deffinatly look a lot better i just dont want to make my boat slower i have spent a LOT of money to gt the last 4-5 mph and dont want to kill that just for astetics...do you have a pic of how high the carb is compared to the headers?

You are running good with your setup. Leave it alone.

My first boat had an Olds and I was very happy with a similar setup as yours. If you start going over 5K, you will be spinning bearings. Enjoy it as it is

    I have a 455 w/tunnel and 2 660's...it runs fine...but it's v-drive...near as i can figure a tunnel ram 'might' be good for 15-20 hp....but if you are spinnin
it 5k you don't need any more power......

If you do end up with the tunnel...be prepared to do a little tuning...my set-up DID NOT like that 40 lb flywheel at all, even in neutral..ended up with a flex plate and 50cc acc.pumps and as much initial timing as i could get and still get it to start clean...

And in case it matters...70 mph in an olds jet is plenty decent.....

But v-drive will always be...'simply the best"

Its not the best pic but look to the left at my avatar that's my set up its a the offenhauser intake with a 2 spacer under my carb and basset headers.
my 455 turns 4800 all day all day it wont rev up any more than that.

I would bet there's one around but how much do you want to spend. olds parts are like ford parts $$$$$$$$ I have a stock points dizzy with a comp cams conversion kit It seams to do the job fairly well.
I learned the hard way about the hei not fitting with a tunnel ram .
