    Default Pump problems

I rebuilt my 12 jc pump this winter, we took it out this weekend and when you would take off the boat would feel like a slipping clutch, when it would catch and be fine. The more the load in the boat, or on the boat, or the more throttle the worse it is. The last time we took the boat out to tube it seemed to do it longer than normal so i put the boat on the trailer. Its a Taylor LP, mild 454, rock grate, aluminum A impeller. Any input would be appreciated.

is the packing tight? A loose pack with let air get sucked in, causing cavitation.

I think i left it a bit too loose at first, tried tightening it up but no change. Is there away that the packing could of been damaged by being too loose at first? Is it possible for the hand hole cover to leak air also?

yep, the hand hole cover can leak air into the pump and it may not even leak water into the boat in doing so. I experienced that one...had a crimped o ring

I honestly dont remember, first time to build a pump just went off the berkely rebuild manual, and used the paper that came with the wear ring to set the clearance between the front of the impeller and the shoulder. I could have always done something wrong though.

Mine did that when the wear ring welded itself to the impeller and was spinning in the suction housing.

Pull it apart. It's either full of weeds or rope, your impeller/wear ring relationship is screwed up, or you're sucking air through the packing/hand hole cover.

You're either sucking bubbles or making them....gotta figure out why.

Did you use the old impeler or replace it with a new one. If so, what brand?
    Just curious.
