Also, it ran 44mph at 3800 RPMs. Bone stock motor, haven't even checked the timing since we bought it and its still running on points

What engine is it ? I would expect to see at least 4600rpms from a stocker.

I'd have to agree with Jim. I know the SST's were heavy boats, but the RPM seems way low. You might want to check the tune on your motor. All the usual suspects. Make sure the throttle is actually going all the way open when you depress the gas pedal. Check the secondaries to make sure they're opening as they should.

    Something doesn't sound right.

It will turn plenty more RPM if we asked it too, it would hold 3800rpm with maybe a 3rd of the gas pedal. We are just unsure of where the redline is on this motor. Plus it has a smaller oil pan right now so we dont want to sustain a high RPM and dry out the bottom end. The motor also has vacuum secondaries right now, we'll change that one day but not this summer. I want to get my Rebel running 1st. Then my dad wants to get his CVX going. (we have a small jet boat addiction lol)

the SST has a chevy 454 Panther, as best as I can tell (according to the valve covers). I saw some where in here that Panther made pumps once upon a time but TBH I dont know much of anything about them though. so please feel free to edumacate me some on this motor

comon...just put your foot in it. If goes past 5500, start lifting. Run it. Panthers are decent pumps up to about 65mph.

the pump is a JG berk, its the motor that we arent too sure about. before we rebuilt the pump we bumped 4800rpm for a couple seconds and gps'd 47mph or something like that. but the pump cavitated like hell out of the hole. rebuilt it and know it will throw your head back!

we are gonna throw some thicker oil in it and run up the RPM a little more next time out.

    That's funny.

The reason we brought it up is because max speed/rpm/impeller cut is a very good means of figuring out how everything is working.

Saying 3800 with a 1/3 of the gas pedal doesn't mean much.

One thing's for sure your redline is higher than 3800.

Back when I was still running a stock 460 BBF I'd flat foot that thing from one end of the lake to the other. It had a 5 quart pan on it and the engine never blew. Stock motors are pretty forgiving.

well then if a Ford cant take it I'm sure that 454 could too (sorry, just love to make those jokes even if I dont buy them either!)

Hopefully I can take it out on monday and I'll pin it out for ya. We put an A2 cut in the pump so lets see if that was the right one lol
