    Default Cavitation Question

I have an Ultra 21' Stealth (V-bottom bowrider) with a setback Dominator and a Vortec 6.0. Getting on plane at anything more than 60-70% throttle causes the pump to cavitate, but once it is on plane it seems to be tight and actually runs the top speed it should.

My question is how to diagnose whether this is an intake issue or whether it is something with the bowl/impeller. Obviously it is not an overabundance of HP or Torque...

I understand that loose packing glands might allow air into the intake, and they should be snug...but not TOO tight. So WTF is SNUG?

Also, the inspection hole is outside the boat. I would have to believe it is still all but submerged at slow planing speeds, but could it still suck air?

Have experience with jet boats, but this is a new setup to me and just looking to head in the right direction BEFORE I resort to tearing the pump apart and/or rebuilding something.

    Thanks all...

I think 1 drop a minute from the packing is perfect. Unless you have something in the intake I'd say it's time for a rebuild. But would'nt know for sure unless ya tore it down.

check the leading edges of the impeller, should be nice and sharp. thats the starting point, if they need a tune up, it will come out and then, you check the wr clearances.

Yep...trying to eliminate all the obvious (and external) possibilities before going into the pump.

I really do think it just needs to be rebuilt, but being up here in Oregon I am not familiar with who the "go-to" guys are for Dominator pumps.
