have you taken a reading at the battery with a dvom to see what the actual voltage output is?should be around 13.8v to 14.6v. perhaps your having a gauge issue if your voltage is within spec when checkes at battery

x2 and if alt is junk, pick up a 1 wire alt and be done with it

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

I was having some gauge problems this last weekend. The water temp was high, and the voltage was low...12v.
As the day went on, and the hull got bounced, it became apparent that the terminal block I use under the dash was losing ground. I thought I was going to lose ignition as the volts never registered over 12. A little pressure to the wiring harness under the dash got the ground in check and the temp went to normal, and the volts showed 14.

Heard from a friend today it could be the optima batteries, have you ever heard of these batteries showing low voltage reading at idle. I have to try and bring the RPM's up and see if the voltage raises we will see.
