Default berkely 12je growling noise at idle

i would like to know if anyone has ever had a thrust bearing go out and what kind of noises it made. ever since i got this boat it has had a strange growling noise only at idle to 1300 rpm im pretty sure its coming from the pump. also if the wear ring was bad would it make this growl. i have put at least 30 hours on it and it has not got any worse or better.

if it has a stainless impeller it will growl at idle. if its a bearing it will be noisy all the time.

My first jet did that and come to find out, people will also say that it can come from where the drive shaft meets the pump on that splined shaft, i will not have a postive lock with each other until under constant throttle. can be from the cam/ idling it wont make full contact causing that kinda grinding/ moaning noise . just something else to think about.

I had a bearing fail. The sound is a growling, grinding kinda sound that kind of goes away but it just a higher pitch sound while under power. Lucky for me I had enough room between the crank and the Hbar. I did get the crank hot enough to melt the 1 piece rear seal.

I have a stainless thats noisy at idle. I had the pump freshed up and thats the noise it makes with a stainless impeller.

    Question

Why does a stainless impeller make a growling noise?

cave mentioned when his bearing failed it got real hot at the thrust bearing mabey i should run it this weekend and check that out. i do have some play in the shaft splines also. is there anyway to repair that without changing the shaft out.

I would suggest NOT taking a chance. Its a bitch if you have a 2 piece seal plus if the forward thrust is great enough it could damage your crank or worse. Your impeller wants to move forward. Any play or give will allow it to do just that. If the bearing fails. The impeller will take out the Thrust bearing in the rear of the engine.

I had that growl and to be safe I had the pump freshed up. Everyone said the pump was OK but I had to know. I think they call it Piece of Mind. Now the sound doesn't bother me. Its a jetboat

    Good Luck, cave

ok i just removed the thrust bearing cap to find out thrust bearing is bad. at least thats what i would assume if ball bearings came flying out. looks like i'll be pulling the engine to get the shaft out the front to press bearing on and off.

growel our ass. At leasat you caught it early before it hurt motor. does shaft have to come out. i have my motor out for build and amd wondering how easy it would be to replace. after removing the cap can you slide the bearing off the shaft and put a new one on without having to take pump all apart? i know for some that might be a stupid question but i am here to learn about the steps. i might be way off.

Depending how strapped for cash you are, It would be a good time to freshen up the pump. Now that your going to pull it out. Do a pump rebuild. If your Impeller is good then its just bearings & seals. You can get all the stuff you need form one of the guys here. JBP, HTP, REXMAR or CPP.

Better find out now than summertime.
