    Default Engine dilemma

Just bought a 77 Rogers Drag Star w/o motor. First motor was a KB Hemi; last motor was a 541 Merlin, so I belive it's still setup for a BBC... I do intend on racing this boat again, but I'm undecided on what power to put in it.

Not sure which class I want to run in. I'm thinking the boost class might be more than I want and at the same time, I'd like to hold true to the non boost classes (ME/CJ class?) this boat has competed in the past.

I'd like to run a LS based motor, say LQ9 (6.0) with about 20-30 lbs of boost.

    or

BBC, like a Merlin or LSX for high compression ratio and big cubes

I think the LS motor would be easier (and probably better $'s per HP?) to get more power out of than the old school BBC...? But either way I'm torn....

    Thoughts? Discuss!

I'm looking to make a 9 second boat... And obviously I want to be competitve in my class I'm afraid that I'll be into a BBC ~$10k before I'm done?

Also thought about an 8.1L, what is that? gen VII and 496? I believe they come with a forged crank? But I've heard a lot of people say they are junk??? I may know where one is that has low miles, PCM, harness and all accessories that I might be able to get for ~$1500 or so....

...Lots of choices and that's what is making this so hard of a decision.... Wife is also pissed that I bought this boat in the first place. So I've gotta get it race ready on the cheap

Good Luck with that ! Your talking boost & a fast jetboat on the cheap? Those three terms dont belong in the same sentence.

take the lq9 and put some forged rods and pistons in it, have the block oringed, use the stock crank and have it all balanced. use 243 stock heads, upgrade the valves to decent ss valves, buy some elgin beehive springs and set em up to 150lbs on the seat, ls7 hyd roller lifters, stock rockers, comp pushrods, gm ls7 5layer mls headgaskets, arp head studs, a nice texas speed turbo cam bout 565 lift on a 114lsa, borg warner s480 blowing into a csu 850cfm blowthru carb, a.i.s. 3 nozzle injection. make a easyyyyyy 1000hp/ftlbs at the crank on pumpgas and bout 22lbs weigh in 200lbs lighter than your bbc buddies that motor above could be done easily for under 6k total , and it'd live day in and out, no adjusting valves, no race gas, no worries bout muffler tickets etc..

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

Exactly along the lines I'm leaning...

You the same guy I talked to on the other board doing the 5.3 turbo? If so, it's your fault
