    Default BBC magneto not firing?

I've never been around a magneto before, it was on the boat when I bought it. From what I understand the coil is built in?

If you take the cap off and crank it over, the points fire, but there's no fire to the spark plugs. What would be the first thing to point fingers at? The condensor?

Also.... How can I make my Tach work on a boat with a Mag?

You don't have the small wire from the mag grounded do you? You have to be sure that wire is not grounded. Grounding that wire is how you stop the motor. What are you using for a switch. Some switchs will keep the mag from firing, even when open.

When you say "my" tach. do you mean a tach that was not originally in the boat. Standard electrical tachs do not work with mags. You either use a mechanical tach, or one specailly made for a mag.

Well slowly but surely I'm realizing the previous owner of this boat would probably lie to his grandma lol. I bought it blown up, so I have not seen the Tach work, but it doesn't seem to me that it ever could. I know it's an Autometer tach.

The ground wire is ran to a switch by the drivers seat. That's about all I really know about a mag is you ground it to kill it, we tried cranking it over with the wire completely unhooked and still a no go. The points fire, but the spark plugs dont.

He told me when I bought the boat (blown up) that when it was previously running, it idle'd at 1200-1300 and it would max out at 6800 on top end.... But I see no way for this tach to work. I haven't fired it up yet though.

autometer makes a mag tach , hard to tell it from the frt as they look like your basic autometer monster tach. what kinda plug wires are on the mag and did you change em?

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

I'm not sure the brand. I haven't changed them because supposedly it ran earlier this year.

I had one wire that wasn't firing. It turned out to be that the screw that holds the wire in the cap. It has to go into the core of the wire(it's been a while, so correct me if I'm wrong).
Did you test all the plugs for a spark? Would/could it be grounded anywhere else?
Maybe the magnets need to be charged?

It has to be something he is doing, or the thing is grounded some where. Because mags never never ever fail

How do you know your not getting spark at the plugs, are these new plugs, whats the gap, when hooking up the tach you didnt run power to the mag by any chance, are the wires good, how do you know the condenser is good, is it spinning, do you have the firing order right from the cap.
Just some quick stuff to ask.

Because I pulled a plug and stuck it on the rear motor plate with while cranking the engine over and it makes no spark. Tried 2 different cylinders.

    New plugs

    .040 gap

I don't know about the wires.

I'm not sure the condensor is good, but I bought another one and will install it some time this week. From what I understand, it just keeps the points from burning up. It doesn't affect the output. If I'm wrong please correct me, that's what a tech line told me.

    Yes it spins.

No I didn't have the firing order right, I just learned that. Regardless....It doesn't make any spark. Not it's trying to start and won't. The spark plugs don't spark.

I'm going to change the wires around to the firing order instead of cylinder number and install the new condensor. If it doesn't fire then, I'm either shippping it back to Vertex to see if they can fix it, or I'm buying an MSD.

that's alot of gap for a vertex mag that may be weak. stick your finger in a plugwire, spin the hell outta it and it should bite ya, if it dont then the wires either have too much resistance for a mag or they're not making good connections in the "cap"

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

How built is this engine? Is there a reason you need to run a mag? Because there are plenty of people that would pay stupid money for those things. If I were you I'd sell it and get something you are more comfortable with and suits your needs better. You won't EVER see a mag on my stuff...but that's just me....and I like all that weird electronic stuff!
