    Default Ratchet Release/Jet-a-way

Hey guys, I am looking for a jet-a-way, and am pondering the idea of building one. I am just trying to not get another $1500 hickey, trying to get legal. Has anyone been down this road? I have a Southwind Tunnel and dont want to cut the boat for a Pop-Off.

first thing i would check with dwyane at hi tech and see if his ratchet is patented, next he sometimes has rebuilt units at a discount off retail. almost anything can be machined or reverse engineered, can you do it easily will be the question, to protoype a unit test it make the drive dogs or get them from casale i have my doubts that you could save much even if you donate an unlimited amount of time and labor. this product has a long history of working and my .02, in saving your life and or your boat maybe a small price to pay to use an off the shelf unit. just my opinion

I got lucky when we bought ours. Dwayne had a just finished a rebuilt one and we bought it. Used ones are about the same price as a rebuilt.

If building one made sense we would have built one. The heat treated shafts and dogs etc will cost quite a bit just for one.

I know but can only do the engine this year, next winter it will get stringers, I want the release so I don't have to run the pump to start and tune the new motor

Save quite a bit of "cheese" removing the four bolts that connect the pump to the engine.

slightly "off topic" but to address Hiho's ?? ,Simple enough to turn 3 point (depending on the actual mount style) into a Jetaway compatible deal with a little engineeering , heres an example done last season

Yes, thats what I was thinking more time and $$ than it worth, I will call HTP, and see what he has. I almost bout another boat, and was going to take the release off it and try to resale it.

I do not think whether it is patented or not has anything to do with it. You can make or copy anything you want for yourself. Patents protect others from manufacturing and competing on the market.

I bought as jetaway in '08. It is installed but, have not used it yet, hopefully have it in the water this year. Also like the neutral feature for firing up on trailer.
