2 ways of installation and different schools of thought, Old school is to run the cable down the left side to the transom and then make a big "S" bend to go thru the transom (steer tube,Berks ATs'Dominatorsa nd Jacuzzi ) for this measure from the center of the helm to the left gunnel then measure to the transom and the add about 3 feet cables routed this way look good but tend to be a little longer , longer = less reactive and will fail sooner from tighter radius bends IMO,
We run the cable down the left gunnel to just past the rear of the rear passenger seat (front of the motor box) then across the floor making a sweeping bend to run the cable along the left stringer and straight thru tto the steer tube , this not only reduces the length but makes the turns in the cable larger radius's generally most 18' boats take 15' cables 20's and 21' use 16's Call if you need help Tom
