    Default Distributor/Electronic Ignition Question???

Question for those in the know - I want to upgrade my boat from points to electronic ignition before the season starts - due to variety of reasons (mostly budget) would like to go with Pertronix Ignitor system.

Here's my problem - boat stored at river and won't have access to it until next trip up in late April. Would like to purchase kit before heading up but don't want to buy wrong kit. Neighbor snapped a few pics for me (see below) of distributor hoping someone can help in identifying (Prestolite snap-down/Prestolite screw-down/Mallory - most commonly referred to kits I see online). Please forgive my ignorance on what I've got as I've never paid too much attention to it until now.

A little info that might help in identifying the distributor - boat is Carrera 202xr - engine is Marine Power 454HO. Thank you in advance for any and all help - RSR

Looks like a HEI already. What year is it? You have seen points in it?

Evilforce - yeah I believe it has points - last time we did tuneup buddy pointed it out and had to get the timing gun out to set the timing. Plus it is always a bear to start and has been getting worse - points getting old/corroded?

It is a 2002 - I agree with you wouldn't expect it on a boat of that age (?).

No points in that boat. A timing light is used regardless of electronic ignition or points. Hard starts could be old gas, needing a tune up, or build up in the carb. Thats a great motor, you should have it checked out by a pro to keep from harming it.

    Default Delco Dist

One of the problems with those dstributors was there was a coil recall. What is the year of the boat and engine combination. And like everyone has posted earlier, you already have an electronic ingnition!

Greg (the guru) and everybody else - sorry my mistake about the ignition and THANK ALL OF YOU for the help.

    Greg - Boat is 2002 Carrera 202xr - Engine Marine Power 454HO.

Boat has always had trouble starting compared to other friends boats. Any suggestions on how to solve problem?

    Thank you in advance.

Greg - thanks for chiming in - still remember you taking the time years back when I met you and you blueprinted my Jacuzzi pump on my first boat (and probably my favorite boat) - my 1974 Glencoe 18 footer - which if I remember correctly you had some fond memories of yourself. Thanks again for the insight.

    Default Coil

When you go to the river get the serial number off the coil and give it to me and see if that is the problem.

Since your distributor is now 11 years old, why not consider a complete replacement? The ChevProMarine is designed for what you are doing, and with its built-in 50,000 volt coil your starting and performance will definitely improve! Gap your spark plugs at .060 and go for it!
