    Default

Thats a "orifice" for a magnetic timing probe from that motors automotive "throwback" (late 70's early 80's irst generation emission control Its been alooong since I worked at Oldsmobile time but I belive top dead center is with the dampner mark dead nuts in the middle of the hole , you could use a tape measure and mark your dampner circumferance in 90,45 etc increments or buy timing tape but it might be easier to buy and replace it with an early incremented timing tab Tom

    Default Timing??

Even with the correct timing pointer it is a hit or miss, +/- several degrees from absolute TDC unless the engine has been measured and marked. I would say get it close and drive it. Keep advancing it until it becomes a little hard to start and back it off a few degrees....2,3,4, degrees won't really make a lot of difference initially, it's where it's all in that counts, and that is "in" the distributor, and will make a difference....
