Several things come to mind the worst being "crankcase pressure" from "blowby" (worn pistons/rings excess clearance etc , I'd do a wet dry compression test and cylinder leakdown test , but also and overfilled crankcase along with several other factors could cause this Tom

I put a piece of hose on the dipstick tube then push the dipstick in.

I have a breather on the front and the pcv on the back. I leave my dip off with a black rubber vent block off on the sleeve. Just keep your dip in the boat somewhere to check oil every now and then.

A straight sparkplug boot works well for that but this works better

i had the same problem with my 460 in my sanger when i first got the boat last year. and im pretty sure it was caused by excessive crank pressure from blowby. the motor turned out to be pretty worn out when i pulled it this winter to rebuild it. now it is no longer a problem with the fresh rebuild. not sure if this is what your problem is but it was in my case. good luck

Does your oil smell like fuel?
