    Default Thrust Bearing or U-Joint

    My neighbor across the street has a 1977 Kona with a berkeley "E" pump. We took the boat out yesterday and the boat has a very noticeable vibration and noise at idle. Set the idle up to 1200 RPM and it helped. How can you determine if it is bad U-joint or a bad thrust bearing..thanks..

    If it goes away whith a little throttle it's probably neither. It could be a worn or loose driveshaft yoke on the pump shaft. Give it some grease and see if that helps. When you say vibration; do you mean it rattles and makes noise, or that it actually shakes the boat quite a bit?

    Rattles...and you can feel that rattle throughout the boat..when you increase the idle the noise is way less..but still slightly there..when under full throttle there is no vibration..the grease always seems to help but then the noise eventually returns..when you say give it some grease are you saying try and squirt some in the spline on the pump side..that he has not tried..thanks..

    Remove your intake grate and grab the shaft or the impeller and see how much back and forth movement you have, ( as in clockwise and counter clockwise rotation). If there is quite a bit, you probably need to pull your motor and look at the splines on the yoke.

    ..the grease always seems to help but then the noise eventually returns..
    This just about tells you the yoke and/or shaft have some wear in them. The yoke usually goes first.

    Thanks..whats the test for the thrust bearing..is it a certain noise..can you take a hard object like a pipe and place on the outer case around the thrust bearing and listen for a particular type of noise..

    Oh that test is simple, put a brand new bearing in there and is it shuts up throw the old one in the trash, if not save the old one for a weekend backup. Sorry , for the drunk post just

    Thrust bearing has more of a tendency to growl or whine than rattle like a loose spline.
    They often make More noise as the load increases.

    Also you can reach up under the drive line and wiggle it. If it has ANY up or down movement, it's a gonner. Mine did the same thing a couple of years ago.......
    I also have a Kona with the E pump.
    Replacing thrust bearing is cheap insurance too! Cuz if IT goes bad, BIG $$$$$

    FWIW when I reset my intake and motor, I set the motor absolutely parallel to the pump shaft. Up to around 1500 RPMs it sounds like the engine/pump is gonna explode. After researching on the website, I found my mistake was not giving the pump and engine a couple degrees out of parallel...
