    Default A little tuning help.....

Just fired up my boat, set timing and made sure alternator was charging. While tuning, I noticed fuel dumping down on the primary side, excessive smoke in exhaust. This thing literally sucked down almost a gallon of gas in about 5 minutes run time. So here is the specs....454 BBC .030 over. Timing at 10* initial, HEI. Has a Holley Carb I bought used from reliable source. It has 80 jets primary and 81 secondary, 27 squirter primary and 31 secondary. Bleed screws are 1-1/2 out. Float levels set. 30cc pumps. This is a mechanical secondary DP. About 840 CFM (800 CFM with horn cut and blended). I have adjusted the acc pumps and verified they are not causing the issue. The fuel is pouring out from the boosters on primary side, just dripping. What am I missing here...

Either the fuel pressure is too high or the float level is too high.

Piece of poohh in one of needle & seats. Remove them and clean them with carb cleaner and blow'em out with air. Visual inspect and reinstall. Adjust down to where the top of the needle & seat assembly is about centered in the adjustment nut for the intial adjustment. Should be very close as long as the float arm hasnt been bent. then do the final adjustment from there. Thats probaly all that wrong, good luck, Hass.

Damn, Mark beat me to the punch. I agree with him too. Be sure to verify that you have around 7psi of fuel press.

Ill put a gauge on the fuel rail. I never even thought to double check. It is a Carter mechanical rated at 120 GPH, was supposed to be pre- set but you never know. Ill post back when I got a number here. Thank you!

OK......so much for the reliable source on the carb lmao! I can only blame myself for not going through it before bolting on, but after checking the fuel pressure (7.5psi) decided to pull the bowl and check it out. The fuel was pouring down the primary side, but coming out of the boosters, not the vent tube. Turns out it will do this if there are no jets screwed in at all Went ahead and took care of that little issue, and decided to go through the carb while I was at it. All dialed in and ready to get wet now!
