    Default Gas tank baffles ?

I have an issue with the saddle tanks in my boat. They are only 8gal tanks, and even when they are full everytime I let off the throttle and decellerate the fuel pumps pick up air and air lock. Both on the NOS system and the carb system. I'm running a return style setup on the nos system and a dead head regulator on the carb. Everything works perfect except for the tank problem. I took a dental mirror and looked inside the tank and there isnt any kind of baffle or trapdoor setup. My question is can Russel or any of the tank companies install this into my tanks ? Obtw, they are stainless.

hass, there's a place here in hugo that can cut the end caps off the tanks, go in and put whatever you want in there. i'd have a baffle wall put in with holes in it about 2-3inches above the bottom of the tank, thataway it spills over into the baffled area while driving, then during shut down, the fuel can't jump the wall call billy if ya need that guy's tele#, he put the bungs in billy's tank.

Thanks for the info Tom, I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and if trapdooring the tank fixed the problem or if it made it a little better or what the results were?

I had that problem too and still have it with my current boat.
With EFI it is really noticeable.
I posted the question on the hot boat forum and the solution was the foam filler material that is available.
I don't remember the sources but it could be searched on the HB forums.

I cut my tanks down from 60" to 36" and am thinking that is going to minimize the problem without putting in the foam.

The guy I got the tanks from had the same problem too.

hass, i wonder if you put a couple loops in the fuel line near the tank, with the loops pointed downwards, if that would cure it. it'd have more fuel in the supply lines than it does now and would keep the pump from starving for a bit till it built pressure. might be worth a try you've had me thinking on this since we talked and that was the best idea i could come up with, without pulling the tanks and having them cut open.

If you really want to stop it you can add a surge tank.
But that complicates things because you need 2 fuel pumps, One to pump fuel from the main tank to the ~1-2 gallon surge tank and then the main pump to pump from the surge tank to the motor.

Thats what some of the car guys do when they swap over from carb to EFI and it works GREAT, of course it does add a bit of complexity

thanks guys, I really dont want to add the additional weight of a surge tank. I got in touch with the guys at IMCO marine and they are making me some custom tanks with trap doors like an oil pan has. Dave at Imco says that this will cure my problems, He has been great to work with on the phone and had me e-mail him some pics of my setup so we could add some custom filler necks and other options. Great place to do business with and they make a beautiful product. I have had a few different Imco tanks and they are top of the line.
After I get them and install in the boat I'll report on the results . Thanks Hass

Hey dude, next weekend is the Eddie Hill thing a Witchita Falls. As far as the tank problem goes , I look at it this way, If I take my tanks out and modify them my boat will be down until I get them back from whoever I decide to have weld them back up, then theres the problem of rounding up the trap doors and stainless materials that I will need. Buy the time I sell my old tanks and buy the new ones I wont be out much more money in the long run than if I modified mine so I'd rather just have the custom made ones, plus they're going to add some kick ass fillers to the inside so I dont have to cut through the sides of my boat. Thats a pet pieve that I've always had, when you put the fillers in the side of your boat the fuel plays hell with the gell coat around the filler and then you also have the chance of getting water into your fuel, glad my boat never had holes cut for'em. Sure wish you boys could make it to Eddie's get together this coming weekend, I'll take plenty of pics & vid to share, then we'll see ya at Broken Bow on memorial weekend.
