For those curious the Canadian world jetboat marathon is underway this year spread over 4 towns in nothern Alberta and NWT. Ice Pilot fans will know Hay river from the TV show who staged the race opener/parade and the first day of racing. Not surprising Spencer King (GO FORD) the local boy took the first day no doubt with a huge advantage being familiar with the rivers etc
There are numerous turbine boats entered this year but many with very little testing/seat time and several out of the overall hunt already. One boat wrecked and plenty of action to come Im sure in the coming days. The race concludes next weekend in Whitecourt AB. **Remember to win the world title your boat must start and finish every leg**

Mark Cromie from NZ decided he'd up the ante from his 1600 hp motor from '07 and run a 2000 HP twin turbo, intercooled, injected beast. My buddy is navigating for him and this boat is a tech marvel for sure....

Holeshot isnt as important as all out top end. Starts are "timed" so even with poor planing ability if you time it "just right" it doesnt hurt your leg times( a clock counts down to the green flag and most legs are 1 min interval starts).
The longer fixed nozzles are more efficient(no "dirty" joints) and provide more bow lift and more responsive steering(fulcrum further away from the boat). When travelling in a straight line the water does not touch anything other than the smooth inner walls of the nozzle. When turning, then and only then, do the parts of the nozzle direct flow side to side. (its almost like two external "paddles" that interrupt the direction of flow) Ive already seen one nozzle blown open but I havent heard if it was pressure/fatigue issue or a rock strike or something altogether different. It was from the US Turbine boat that reportedly hit 142 mph. It did miss that leg obviously and as such is out of the overall hunt already.

Hard to argue with the performance they get from these boats. This year they are running the new "CX" class boats based on the LS3 series of engines in the tradition of the established and very popular ZZ4 "FX" class. Killer race so far, sucks I cant be there to watch it.....

Im REALLY wanting a high res version of this shot. Completely bada$$ :D

I was wondering that myself. The screen in screen is easy with most softwares but not sure how they embedded the Motec system in there, unless thats part of the software package that comes with the data logger/telemetry system. Tomorrow is a day off so I may try to get a hold of Rich and see how they are doing. Read on the net they had some issues today but may have squeeked in before the official close of the leg to stay in the hunt for overall.

(some teams were starting to abuse the system a few years back by starting a leg then pulling off to the side and intentionally not completing a leg. They would be assigned a time (for DNF) based on the slowest boats time plus a percentage which often would be better than a team with a hurt/limping motor could achieve on their own. The rules now gives a leg an offical closing time of 1.4 times the fastest boat on that leg and any boat finishing after that receives a DNF as well as an assigned time for that leg)

The rules were what made the race in 07 such a chatoic finale. The clear leader, Mark Cromie ahead by 12 some minutes only just had to finish the last leg to win the world title. No one could catch him in a 6 lap circuit race. Mass start Cromie pulled out in the lead fending off the 400 hp nitrous shot of Whiteside with pure boost. On lap two however he sucked a loader bar thru the pump and destroyed the impeller! Whiteside(Eagle owner) in third, emptied his nitrous bottle in the next few laps driving like a man possessed trying to make up the two minutes he needed to catch the second place boat which had a very bad start on the final leg. To futher complicate things Cromie swapped impellers in the pits in an incredible 5 minutes or something and got back out on the course to try to make it inside the 1.4 rule befoe the leg officially ended. In the end Cromie missed and received a DNF and Whiteside beat the 2nd place boat.......by six seconds! 580 miles 8 days of racing decided by 6 whole seconds.

Ok so what Im hearing today is the mighty Ford is out (cry) Cromie's out with the twin turbo(I couldnt get a hold of my buddy yesterday and didnt want to bother them too much on the day off, I hear they were wrenching hard trying to get the boat sorted out) and the US turbine boat broke a gearbox(didnt see that one coming ha)
The two remaining Canadian turbine boats are duking it out and the other usual strong boats in the lower classes. Should come right down to the wire as usual, Marathon racing is HARD on equipment! In 07 with 2 days left out little Sportjet boat sat in 8th overall out of 53 boats! Sadly we also suffered a breakdown on one leg and dropped out of the overall. (the winning boat in our class, the slowest, finished 6th overall)

Definitely a sport which adhere's to the rule of the fat lady......
