    Default Billet Distributor

I've finally took the plunge and decided to ditch the old prestoline points distributor and I picked up one of the Pertronix plug and play billet marine deals. What do I need to know when changing them out? Any time and frustration you can save me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Its very easy if you understand they way timing on an engine works. before you pull the old distributor out put the motor on top dead center compression stroke,to do this pull the very front port side spark plug out and as you bring the engine to tdc that you stick your finger in the spark plug hole and as the piston comes up it pushes air out against your finger then when you put the new distributer in you have to make sure that the motor is still on tdc and where the rotor falls that it lines up with #1 cylinder on the cap, if your using the old wires you have to make sure the cap stays in somewhat the same position so that the plug wires are the right length and then match the rotor and #1 line up and you may have to clock the oil pump drive for the distributor to fall in the correct spot.

    hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips!! What if the old distributor has already been pulled and I'm not sure if I'm at top dead center? Should I put the old one in pull the coil wire and find top dead.Or can I do damage this way? Is there a better way? Thanks

No if its already out thats fine just do the same thing its just that if the old one was still in ounce you had it at tdc when you pulled the cap you would see where the rotor was pointing originally so you could put the cap in the same position, but if your making new plug wires it wont matter cause you can make them any length just make sure you get the fireing order right.

Thanks SO MUCH!! I think I actually marked rotor position on the motor. So I can rotate the motor (By turning the key) without the distibutor in?

No dont rotate the motor with the key i would just put a socket on the crank bolt with a large ratchet and bar it over by hand.

And you know that TDC is marked on the balancer on the front of the crank right? you just line up the marks and put your finger in the #1 cylinder to make sure your on compretion stroke.
