Default How do I time my motor?

So my timing of off and that's about all I know about this subject. I got a gun and I'm putting the boat on the water tomorrow but I want to time it right so it doesn't run like shit again. I think I set it to 6 degrees BTDC because someone told me to but I don't think that's right. Can anyone tell me what I need to do?

    Motor:

14015445...454.......78-90...2 or 4 bolt main (I dont know which)

    ----------
    353039.....454...cast (Crankshaft)
    ----------
    14092360...86-90...oval...OPEN...454 Truck, "peanut" round ports

RPM Air Gap with Bassett Twisties
Holley 715cfm list 9049 Marine Carb

Usually you would look for 10 degress btdc at idle, but to be honest, a boat doesn't run at idle. Set your boat at 34 degrees btdc at 3000 rpm. That way you lock out the advance. You might be able to put a little more advance in it depending on your specific motor, but you will have to play with it to see what it likes. Good luck with it.

You need to be more concerned with total timing than initial timing. Do you have a dial back timing light. You may want to try a search....think this has been gone through a few times.

Searching is no fun...that wouldn't leave anything for anyone to do except watch the PRF wars. Nothing like a good ole rehash thread
