    Default I want more top speed

    Hi, i'm new in this ``world of boat``

    in my region Quebec/canada, I'm the only one with this type of boat.

    My Jet boat is a Levac Turbo 17' 1987

    BBC 454,
    Edelbrock RPM intake,
    carburator spacer (2 inch),
    Holley 750 CFM,
    Bassett racing Header with water injector.

    Jet drive : Berkeley 12JE with trim

    I run 105 km/h GPS (65 mph) i want more top speed, and my first question is about the jet drive; is exist bigger than the 12JE ?

    i will modifie the engine to 500+ BHP and i want information about : how work the jet drive, HP/RPM VS the Best impeller to run fast with good acceleration,

    65 MPH at what RPM? What HP do you have now? What top speed are you looking for?

    Welcome to the sickness that is boating. Be prepared to spend thousands of dollars and countless hours of labor to see High speeds (100mph+). Your only limited to your imagination and your wallet!

    X2 on what rpm are you turning at WOT and 65mph. Some wise member of the forum had said, "It costs money to go fast". First question is do you know the impellor size in your JE pump? If the pump has been modified, and you do not know what impellor is in the pump, the only way I know how to check impellor is to pull it and look at size stamped on the back. Second question, do you have a dyno sheet indicating torque curve? Last question, do you or any of the knowledgeable members know how readily your hull will accept increase in speed? From here, you can get an idea of what you have to work with and how much money it will take to go faster.

    there are others on this board that know WAY more than I do. However, for starters the basic principal behind more speed here is Step 1: you will need to lower your RPM and Step 2: get more power out of you motor (obviously).

    Some ways to accomplish lowing RPM is to get an inducer and a loader. My understanding is that these cram more water into your pump making it more effective but also creating more bog on the motor, so you RPMs will drop a bit and then you speed should come up a little (a few MPH)

    Next up as you make your motor build more power you will want to change the cut (or pitch) on your impeller. Ex. it sounds to me like you might have an AA impeller or possibly an A impeller so youll want to change to a B or something like that. However before jumping to a B impeller I think you are going to need to have your motor turn more than 500hp.


    Now this is all info that I have gleamed from lurking these boards and as I said earlier there are tons of people here who know WAY more than me. the biggest thing I have learned about going fast is simple... How fast your boat goes depends on how much you spend on it!

    thanks very much you opened my eyes about this,

    so my jetdrive 12JE is ok... for how much Power ? I don't know the difference about the all kind of Berkeley (JE,JC JF JG...)

    I'm new in this world of boat, it's a new past time for me. So i need to take the maximum of informations about it.

    The main and obvious differences in the pumps are cosmetic. The JC and JG pumps are top steer with the hand hole on the inside boat. The JE pump is a bottom steer pump with the majority of the pump outside the transom. Im not too sure about the performance differences in the different pump models but I THINK I heard a whisper that the JE doesnt handle a lot of power like the JC or JG pumps supposedly do. Dont quote me on that though bc I honestly cant see why

    Now IMO I like the JG pumps the best mostly just because they are the easiest to put a droop snoot on Then place diverters are fairly universal between the different pump models. Try using the search function on the forums here and you will find a huge wealth of information in older threads

    Lets see pics of the boat, preferably with the misses in the pic.

    The JE pump has some potential, but the intake angle is more steep than the JC/JG so it runs out of steam before its big brothers do. I seem to recall there have been some in the 70-80 range but Im not positive. None of this may matter though if the hull is not capable of higher speeds.

    There are some tools you can use to help the boat(Shoe, Loader, diverter, detailed bowl & impeller), but making a boat go faster safely can take some trial and error. More horsepower will be required and thats where it starts getting expensive, depending on how fast you want to go of course. I haven't heard of that boat before but it may be a splash of something someone here has experience with which could prove helpful for getting a baseline setup.

    On a typical V bottom jet with a JC/JG, it takes anywhere from 500-600hp to achieve 70-75 mph, depending on the hull, some hulls might require more power though, and the E pump may also take more power.Before you go rebuilding your motor and adding a bunch of go fast parts, Id recommend looking around the boards for a couple of weeks and making a note of setups that are similar to yours, and try to come up with a plan. You may find that your boat isn't a good candidate for your goals. Jet boat motors and boat motors in general will perform best with tolerances designed for a boat-many a car motor has failed in a jetboat so its best to make a note of these things before you have a car guy build you a motor.

    That looks to be a copy of a Taylor SJ! Good boats that are good to about 80 MPH anything over you are on your own! E pumps are good but you have to get the setup right for best performance! 65 MPH is not to bad and a few motor mods will get it to 70 MPH easy! Look and see what loader you have a good loader(over stock rock grate) will help and you want break the bank!

    Small steps at a time and you will get there faster than changing a bunch of things at once!

    I would recomend a call to Tom over at jet boat performance. www.jetboatperformance.com He has a lot of experience with e pumps and budget builds. The correct loader will help you gain a little more speed as well. Installing a loader with 6-10 inches of blocker would help you get up on top of the water and run a little dryer but it is a tradeoff with out of the hole accereration.
