Default Busy night working on the boat last night...some Q's

Last night I added 4* of wedge (from JBP), new packing seals (from JBP), set ride plate at 2.6* from 3.2*, and swapped an RPM dual plane intake for a Super Victor intake - maybe a little more mph is in my future???

On the packing seal, I have a question, how "snug" should it be?
I keep hearing everyone say snug; but I've never done this before so I don't know how snug to get it...
Like, where I feel a little pressure to turn; or just don't use brute strength, or what?

Also, at 700-1000 rpm my pump makes a sound that is similar to, say, bolts/nuts being swirled in the bottom of a metal coffee can. It's not a knock or grind...but it is noise - is that the normal pump noise I hear about? Seems to go away at 1100 rpm. This was before the packing seal replacement - and I haven't run it since the seal was replaced because I don't run my boat out of water.

"No, my boat doesn't need any more power" - No one ever

The packing seals, you just want alittle presure on the bolts, go to tight it will crack or brake! the noise in the pump sounds to be to close of clearences, I would recheck you pump, you can look under the boat, throught the grate, or pull the grate and see if you can see or feel and damage to the wearring or impeller! Thats what I would do, Just my ,02,, oh and while you are looking, you should check the thrust bearing as well!

Grease your u joints and see if the noise goes away, that is a very common area for people to forget about. As for the packings get them snug then put the boat in the water and tighten each nut equally til water drips one drop every 5 seconds or so. You dont want it to stream water and conversely dont want them to burn up by being too tight.
