If I understand correctly the half moon key is stuck in the 3/4 tapered rack shaft ? if so clamp a really good pair of vice grips very tightly on it (the woodruff key) and tap upward on the end of the Vice grips to "ask" the key to come out Tom

Just trying to visualize , if this is a Morse or teleflex once the actual steering wheel is off the adaptor hub comes off by removing a large nut ,leaving a Hub once the hub is pulled from the shaft the shaft should be protruding from the dash with the key in it ? if the key is stuck go with the vice grips then clean up or replace the key install the longer hub and reinstall the steering whell viola ! no need to pull the help that I could see? Tom

Dykes. Grab it with dykes and rotate it up, they have a built in lever.
