    Default thru transom exhaust problem

    I just put a new motor in my boat 496 bbc with lightening exhaust.I tuned motor before took it to lake the motor ran great.got to lake had minor carb adjustments ran descent not what expected but got home and check oil all milky.any suggestions.someone said cam problem.any advice or suggestion.I read it might be a cam issue. If so any tricks to suggest?

    A higher than normal idle reduces reversion, are you running flappers in the tips?

    pressure test the engine first, make sure it sealed correct.

    Doin that first thing in the mornin got the rest of week to find out a fix.my research on reversion is. Cams over [email protected] problems mines [email protected] just piced a gate valve up after I pressure test ill finish flushing oil and try it again at lake and cross my fingers.am I on the right track???

    Yes I do have flapers on tips..if the headgaskets good im asuming lower waterflow id really hate to go back to putting stock motor back into this..

    I run a blown 565 with around 260-270 @ .50 with it surging between 800rpm and 1600rpm with zero reversion problems, water pressure set @ 15lbs on the engine and the intercooler. We have a few set up real close to this with zero issues as well....

    Are you getting the engine and oil up to temp? Could be a bad condinsation problem as well!

    The engine temp never gets up on the lake that's another reason for the valve but the oil getts fricken hot to where I can't hold the filters longer than 10 secs.

    Can you get reversion with double jacketed headers? Thats what you got,i dont think you can,

    I agree with Lupo. I was going to ask whether you had logs or headers. If the water flowing through your exhaust system isn't entering until down stream of the collector I don't see how a reversion issue could cause this. If you have something like Bassets then that's a different story. Pressure testing the cooling system would be a quick way to find out where the leak is.

    The Lightnings dump all of the water in the exhaust stream just past the collector. If you think you have a reversion problem, remove a header after you boat and look for droplets of water in the exhaust ports. No water equals no reversion. Other problems can include: non-marine headgaskets, poor quality or no sealant on the headbolts(check this first by removing a rocker and looking for clear water around the bolt heads), incorrect intake gaskets or install issues. We have run and built many Chevys and Fords and the smallest cam we use with Lightnings is usually a roller with about [email protected], most are in the range of [email protected]+. My current ride has 266/[email protected] with no issues. Lock out the distributor and set your timing to 32-34 degrees, it makes them idle better and be more responsive. Call for further details, but don't blame the headers. TIMINATOR

    Lupo I looked at the lightening website and I found the website info on reversion with their headers and they state the cam info I posted earlier but they recomend their cam lifter kit with the same lift as mine but I think its a sales pitch with the automotive cams don't work theory I just can't understand how or what the differnce is???besides all that im thinking of picing up a bypass regulator at the pump to help some of the pressure issues..I just thought some experienced knowledgable person with these might have an answer beside changing the cam....p.s yeah its plumbed the same the website shows same method but also on jetboat performance website found some new plumbing methods to reg water pressure and put a themostat in the motor to get motor temp up...anyone have input im up for options..gotta check block pressure ill be back..

    Pressure check the block.

    Oil temp sounds cold if you can hold you hand on the filter for 10 seconds. Too cold of oil. Operating temp should be around 200-210 when cruising. 230-240 after hard run. Needs to be hot enough to burn off condensation.

    Reversion can happen at low idle if the tips are below water line even with Lightning headers. Raising idle rpm should take care of that problem. I run mine at idle at 1200 while in the water. I've yet to have a problem. The cam info necessary are really the valve timing events which are located on the cam card. Talk to Jan at lightning about the timing events, not the motor timing. He has done tons of testing with larger cams to figure out what works and what doesn't. Check the plugs after you get home from a trip to the lake. Are they rusty?

    More than likely two things are happening. Either you are not getting the oil hot enough and getting condensation build up in the motor or you have a water leaking into the oil somewhere likely a intake gasket.

    I wouldn't put a gate valve inline to reduce water flow, or a thermostat for that matter.

    I run a -08 inlet from the pump no valve no regulator to the motor. Then I run two -08 lines from the top of the motor to the lightning headers. I have a pressure gauge on the outlet of the motor and at 90 mph my block pressure is at 15 psi. Cruising it is at 5 or less.

    Keep it simple. don't over complicate the water system in the boat.

    Widowmaker i agree with you.that is the same way i ran those headers before i sold them to pbwood.but if you want to get rid of them ill buy them back for the same price. Shit ill even throw in your timing light....let me know ....
