    Default Stuffer plate? HELP.....

i purchased a nice used JG bowl with a stuffer plate already mounted in it, i have a berkeley pump with an A impellor, when i went to install the bowl on the pump the impellor is hitting the stuffer, do they make a small spacer to go between the bowl & suction housing? it looks like it needs about 1/8 inch or so?

Contact Ron (topless000 on here) 623-323-1436 he makes a Bowl shim that should help you out with that issue. Oherwise you'll either have to pull the stuffer or do a little machine work here and there to fit it.

if your stuffer is too thick, take the thing out and machine it down. or just take the thing out and check the clearance without it in there at all.
the purpose of that bowl shim has absolutely nothing to do with a stuffer that's too big. and if you do decide to add a bowl shim, make sure your bowl bolts are long enough to adequately fasten the bowl to the suction housing.

thanks, i'll check it out, i did notice that the shaft sticks through the bowl bearings by about a 1/8 inch, and if the bowl was bolted up tight against the suction housing than it would stick out approx. 1/4 inch... it may be just as easy to mill the stuffer down as you suggested.

Agreed, not what it was originally designed for, but if machining is not an easy option, or the stuffer is stubborn and not easily removed, the shim could help out.

if you've removed it, take some measurements to check the tolerance between the bowl and impeller. you may not need it at all. i've never needed one and never run one.

by shimming the bowl back, you increase the distance (and area) between the impeller exit vanes and the bowl volutes. the impeller is then "smaller" when compared to the exit area. for example, it will make an a behave like an ab or a b, depending on how much a person shims it.

but as you've already noticed, shimming the bowl back also results in changing other clearances and tolerances. on the one hand, if it's a very very thin shim, the pump may be able to tolerate it without causing other problems. but if it's much thicker, problems may come up. a thicker shim definately reduces bowl thread depth if the same bolts are used. if there's too much of that, and the suction/bowl isn't double drilled, a person could lose the whole bowl under wot and create a less than desireable situation.
