    Default Michigan Hot Boats?

Ok I've been with MHB for a few years. When I first started going to meets there was a lot of boats that showed up. Now we don't get very good turn outs at all. What can be done to make these meets better? Let's hear your ideas.

Nice one Brian....the can is open and the worms are falling out and can't get up!
The biggest reason is organization. There is none. We use to have meets that were family oriented. The bbq's were smokin, everybody brought dishes to pass. The kids played on the beach, the women were yackin like bunch of crows. You could buy tee shirts and other MHB garb.We had work partys to clean up stumps and ect. Then you have a couple of souls that think they own MHB and the rest will follow like sheep. Some have had hurt feelings and feel the club is now Michigan outboards with no regard to the needs of other boats. We go to the saaaame old places, never any new lakes. MHB needs a face lift!

I dont care if you show up in a blow up canoe with a paddle wheel attached to the back... Im still going to take a look at your boat and prob tell you.. Now thats creative! and ask you where is your with the beer in it? Look at the guy who shows up in a sea plane.. Everyone welcomes him...

I've pointed out before, people can't afford this hobby anymore, and the x-box/playstation whatever has brainwashed the younger generation. I work twice as much and lost pretty close to 2/3 rds of what I used to make thanks to this cut throat economy and internet shopping. I'd love to make every meet.

Ok so why can't we fire up the BBQ again? Should there be an email that gets sent out to inform everyone who's part of MHB of the up coming meet? Didn't they use to do that? I know a lot of people don't come on this form because of it being negative. I know that when there is a meet everyone has a good time. We're a good group of guys and we all love fast boats and seeing them run.

You guys act like this is survivor and make your alliances and wonder who's going to get voted off the island next. This isn't CBS, this is real life. We're all in this club for our own reasons but the basic bare bones of this club are the boats; classic, vintage, hot rod, and racing boats no matter what powercell they are running. That alone helps us stand apart from all the others on the lakes and rivers. Forget the other bullshit and just enjoy the fact that we maintain a hobby that very few would.

A negative attitude will always bring a negative response. If we go into every meet thinking negatively about cops and water levels then we're setting ourselves up for a negative reaction once we're there. If the water level is low, we find a way to dump the boats in or sit on the beach and bullshit. If the cops show up, we show them respect and they generally leave without handing out tickets. None of this is your first rodeo. Make the best out of any situation. Shit, members still found a way to have a good time at the last Wamplers meet of the year in the cold and rain. That's the kind of attitude everyone should adopt! And your mothers all taught you that if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all.

Example: "I don't want to drive 3-5 hours to sit on a beach..."
Response: Stay home. We'll miss you and we'll post pics of all the fun we had.

Boating is supposed to be the escape from our home lives, jobs and sometimes wives so why bring that bullshit with you? There's no reason. Load up the cooler, hook up the boat, and spend the day or weekend relaxing with friends who share a similar interest to you. We're all smart guys who can figure out how to have fun, no matter what the circumstances.

If members are having problems with other members then those individuals need to be men about it and find a way of coping with it. You can take the high road and try to work them out or just plain old avoid each other. I think we'd all prefer that they work their differences out in private and not drag the club in with it. It's detrimental to the group if we're all picking sides.

The majority of the younger x-box crowd would rather buy and ride on wakeboard boats because it's the cool thing to do. I'll admit, I go out with those guys on Wednesdays after work to unwind and pretend I'm some kind pro, but it's really about hanging out with your buds and having a good time, same as hanging out with you guys in the club. I've racked my brain about how to get guys of my age more interested in building hot rod boats, but I think the biggest problem is the hobby doesn't get much exposure. I have one buddy with an old 22' Sleekcraft that runs with me on weekends I'm not at an MHB event and have told him to join us this year. I don't know if there's some stigma that you have to be above a certain age to participate in this sort of hobby, but I'd like to try and bring some fresh faces into the club. I know plenty of car guys who have the mechanical know-how to build and maintain a hot boat, just need to get the bug in them.

I also wonder if we should "advertise" a little more to get the club's name out there and bring people out of the woodwork. Making the club more approachable may help too. Not that anyone now has ever shown me any hostility, but I wonder if outsiders are intimidated to approach us at meets. Getting the public involved is a great way to help curb anti-hot boat sentiment and will open up more venues (lakes) to us to play on.

That's a winter's worth of thoughts on the club.

We can have "Boating for bOObies" stickers made and pass them out. I have a buddy who can make them for cheap.

    Good idea.
