    Default Advice

Well finally back to work and no time to repair the boat.... Anyone on board here want to repair my steering on my Sanger? Got a cable that lost a few strands and its all screwed up going through the stringer...(birds nest)... also want to replace the rudder shaft seal too. Also any info on where to get parts for these repairs appreciated too. Thanks......

Thanks mike. Hey now might be the time to make me an offer on the Sanger. Working 6 10's. It needs a steering cable and a rudder shaft seal. Not sure on how much the parts cost just no time now.

Thanks.....but if I cant fix it, it might sit till winter....6 10's dont leave me with much time to work on it. all the time the past 16 months....then this happens....should be able...just got to find the time to do it and lift the boat to drop the rudder and replace the seal....and cable repair....if someone has the means...call me, i'll pay to have it done...313-600-4286 thanks, dewey

dewey I take it you have outside the stringer steering ,if you look under the dash is it the kind that has two cables with turnbuckles and a chain or is it the calgo within a box?(more to come on the latter if thats what it is)as for the stuffing box -rex marine, glenwood marine,Bergeron marine to name a few

Kinda had a chance to look under the dash....there's a box with grease fittings and the cables feed it. Maybe it can be rebuilt? Can't do much in the evenings, might start removing wheel and stuff next week.

As I found out about 2 years ago from Tom Bentley ,Norm Grimes is the guy that owns the Calgo steering company now you might want to call him to find out about having it rebuilt 818-504-9181,I know you are supposed to lock the unit (in other words don't spin it with the cables loose.

Bergren Marine in Arizona will have everything in stock. The problem will be your rudder, when you pull it out, you will find that it is all pitted and rusty where the seal goes. Most likely if you want it to stop leaking you will have to buy a new rudder or what I have done is weld the whole seal surface up with Stainless Rod and have it turned down to size. People will probably come on here and say that is not appropriate and the point should be well taken that if you have it welded and turned down it could become brittle and break. A new rudder is about 250.00. You can fix your old one for 100 bucks or less. I personally have had 3 repaired on V-Drive boats over the last 30 years and never had one leak or fail after I repaired it and maintained it.
