ID:	22920Here are a couple of images of the '83 Sleekcraft Kauai I bought last month. I bought it minus the engine and dropped in a stock 454 out of a pickup truck. It runs good but I'm planning on installing some better breathing heads, aluminum intake manifold and a Comp Cams jetboat cam in it this winter. It came with a Berkeley J12G drive with manual Place diverter.

That's correct, nice guy I learned quite a bit from him while dealing on the boat. Did you see his Eliminator tunnel hull? Whereabouts are you in Nebraska?

Mitchell is North and quite a ways East. I grew up in Burke which is in central SD about 20 miles from the Missouri river and just a little ways North of the Nebraska border.

Hi Dave how's it going. You're right that would have been a good name, I had a couple others picked out with some sexual inuendo but the wife didn't think they were a good idea. I scored some big oval port heads on Ebay from a '73 454 Stingray and am planning on doing an intake manifold and different cam this Winter, also want do redo the vinyl if the budget will stand it. I'm very happy with the boat, take care buddy.

Glad you like it. It really was a neat boat. Glad you figured it out so easy too. Ported factory large ovals can support 600 HP with the right combo. I'm running ported 049s on mine with a .560 lift cam and manage 74 mph. I need more cam. If it would quit porpusing I could get it close to 80. I ran the same engine in your boat and it ran 65 or so. This is a good sight with plenty of info and opinions. I still need to figure out how to post pics.

It's been fun working on it and my automotive and truck background has certainly helped but I'm sure I'll make some mistakes. I picked up a used oval port Torker II intake for it and it should still fit under the hood, the heads I bought are 049's also. If it had been in a car I would have went with a dual plane intake but the jet boat doesn't seem to require much power at the lower RPM. I hope that was the right decision. The cam I'm leaning towards is a Comp Cams XM278H which is a flat tappet hydraulic, the big concern there is I've heard todays oils aren't very friendly to flat tappets and roller cam kits are pretty expensive. I had it in the water 4 times before the weather got cold with no major issues. It sure is humbling seeing the 1200 hp. monsters that the southern guys have.

That is the same cam I ran last year. I did have it go flat on me last year, #8 exhaust lobe. The original engine that came out of your boat{the same engine I have in my tunnel now} also had the #8 exhaust lobe go flat. So far this year with a lot more hours no problem. I just keep breaking pushrods. Run comps additive and racing oil, valvoline or whatever you can find and you will have no problems. I have the slowest tunnel out there, at least this year. I am going to sell this engine and build something else this winter. My 049s are running stainless 2.19s and 1.88s. You'll be happy with that single plane. I am running a performer RPM airgap and am very happy with its launch.

This Saturday 9-20 looks a lot better weather wise than next weekend. It should be 80 this Saturday, so is anyone interested in going for a ride this weekend?
