    Default Fakin the Dam!

I attended the Shakin the Dam Poker Run with my family and boyfriend this weekend. Although we had a great time with eachother and friends, as well as meeting new friends, I have to say I was quite disappointed in how the evnt was run and how it only followed part of the itinerary that was provided to us upon registration.
1st.. we arrived at Turtle Back Mountain about 7:30, as we walked in another family was coming out and informed us that the event was actually at one of Joe Boydens homes. He had his real estate agents there wanting to sell you the home. Are we at a poker run or a parade of homes open house? What happended to the boat show?
2nd... After registration and being told they had no more womens t-shirts and they would be mailed ( I am doubting I will EVER see that) we were told to go inside for food and drinks. Some green chili stew looking thing and a very sad sub sandwich... What happended to country style buffet at Turtle Back Mountain? Then when we tried to get a drink we were informed there was beer. The vodka, rum, etc.. was only for certain people. Interesting way to host a party. I dont think I have ever had a party and given some people drinks and told others too bad.
Saturday came with beautiful weather and we were ready to run. We had a great run up but there seemed to be confusion AGAIN. The map said the 3rd stop was long point. The intinerary said Hot Springs. At any rate we really enjoyed everyones company. After Lunch there was again confusion as to where the 4th stop was. I guess it really didn't matter seeing as the card boat ran out of gas just south of longs point. So much for the run up to the dam. And what happend to the helicopter?
And then the confusion continued.... Everyone arrives at Turtle Back Mountain for dinner and awards. We are told "they are not ready" it took them over an hour to "get ready". unacceptable! Then two jerks running around in event staff shirts messing with participants trying to charge them to come in. To find out, they were friends of the people from lake racer... I cannot believe this was allowed and that those associated with Lake Racer thought it was funny. Is this the first poker run you all have handled. No announcement was made that dinner was being served. We were promised a band. that to was not delivered. We had some rapper getting down. Two years ago there were pictures and DVD's available to purchase. This year nothing! I wonder if I will ever see that one as well!
To cap off the night after waiting until 9pm with no raffle drawn or winners being announced and asking when this would take place and being told "soon" we gave up and left.

I think next year I am going to try a poker run that is run by a reputable group. This is a little shaddy. I would really like to know what charity received 20%!

It's to bad the event was not more organized. The butte has a ton of potential, but constantly has poor events, bad press, etc. It's a shame.

But, at least people are trying! More than I can say for myself I guess.

Out of town people or local people who have their own personel agenda seem to do these things.
Most people around NM and El Paso put their boats away after Labor Day. The next 45 days are the best weather of the year at the Butte. Plenty of space to camp, limited lake lice, warm days, cool nights for a fire.
You'll find us there every weekend until the end of October.
When we stopped to have dinner on the way at Casa Taco there was an awards going on for a bass tournament.
Why dosen't somebody cooridnate a multi use weekend. Why not have the bass guys participate in a Special poker run and then have thier fishing tournament on Sunday. They've got some hotter boats than some of us.
Throw in some kind of car or bike rally.
Advertise around the state to enjoy the Butte and T or C in the fall.
Get with the State parks dept. and have a couple of fancy boats the week before at the state fair.
Get local business involved. Dukati T shirts does a fantastic job. Make it a fun weekend for a lot of people.
Why not have a pleasure boat class at the poker run.
Last I remembered we're all boaters and we love to have fun.
Set up a spectator fly by area to see us all in action. I saw a lot of people right before we took off come down to see us off. A WoO type salute. A flying start like in unlimited racing for each class.
    It just really bugs me.
Have lived here for 35 yrs. and we can't seem to make it happen.
I'll take our state park at the Butte over any in Arizona.
We have the best kept secret in the US.
It's Chile time, have a cook off.
It could be one of the best weekends of the year if some one would just think and keep personel agendas out of it.
    Thanks, Sundance

I agree with everything u said sundance. The butte has been my second home since I was born. Both of my sons have made their first camping trip at the butte (my youngest was only 4 days old his first time). My family is part of the coc down there, JR that owns casa taco is a fam friend. It's just a great place. Havasu is the closest for me, the setting is similar. The butte has that potential, IMO. Maybe some of us butte crew need to get together and organize something.

There was supposed to be a odr desert race there this weekend we were gonna race, but it was canceled last minute!!!!!

I think we were at the same event but I am not sure. I wasn't around on Friday night so I cannot comment on that, but.......
On Saturday, the sun was out the wind was not blowing and we were on a lake surrounded by people that love the lake as much as us. A bad day at the lake is better then any day at work! I was left out of the t-shirt crew but I have confidence it will show up in the mail and if not o'well. I didn't enter the run for the t-shirt. When it arrives it will go in the drawer with all the other shirts I never wear, then 2 years from now when I pull it out I will remember what a good time I had. The card stops were pretty easy to find. They were the boats/hamburger stand that were surrounded by boats getting cards. They usually had a helicopter flying over or around it and they had a big flag on them. The forth was a little tricky, kinda like a Easter egg hunt. Half the fun is finding the egg/boat. The old butte is not that big by the way. Now for the after party. I am sorry to hear they were not standing at the door waiting for you to arrive and deliver your cards. The worst part about that was I had to take time away from hanging out with my buddies to ask if they were ready. No big deal. The beer was cold, the food was good, but visiting with friends and enjoying the evening was the best part. The guys in the "event staff" shirts were not associated with this event other than being a participant just like you and me. They did have some fun with it and asked two couples for a fee but neither payed. I am thinking you must have been one of them. Sorry. It was funny to the rest of us and it was nothing personal. Just two drunk guys having some fun. I can assure you no boaters were hurt. Sorry for the long post. I can sum it up by saying, I had a blast and will be back next year!

I dont think we have ever met but I recognized your boat from your avatar and threw you a wave when you were on the lake. I think you were anchored to a baja after the second or third stop. Anyway if you remember that was me. my boat is in my avatar.

Everyone I talked to had a blast! They did mention that only Bud Light was offered and were denied any hard liquor. I wasn't there, but I would have loved to see the two jerks running around begging for money. Do you have their names by any chance?

I don't know which party you were at but the one I went to was off the hook. The guys in the event staff shirts were the life of the party and if you would have taken the stick out of you a#$ you would have had a good time too. (You were probably the one who called the cops on everybody at the butte inn) No one got hurt during the run which is a lot more than you can say for other events and as for the lack of organization, it was a laid back attitude but atleast some had the cajones to try and put on a poker run for all of us at home instead of driving 400 miles to an event that would have cost your pocket book 10x's as much. Why don't you call the wa-mbulance next time instead of bashing everybody that had a great time.

Wrong! 400 miles? That drive would be easy! Try 753 miles.

You or the Event Staff may have thought they were funny. The couple of people who they approached didn't think it was funny. I don't think the staff at Turtle Back thought they were either.
Matter of fact one of the hosts of the party went over and told them to cut it when he heard about it.
If you advertise something, then do it! That's why this country is as it is today because people don't make others walk thier talk.
I'll bet you can do your share of [email protected]#%Hing if somebody dosen't fix your boat or truck right. Same thing.
The wa-ambulane will come for you someday.
