New member, new boat, looking for ideas and stuff.
My name is Dave, I'm prior service Navy and finally got around to buying myself something fun for the water. I got a killer deal on an '87 Marlin Aries with a Mercury Black Max 200 outboard (I have been told they are somewhat rare since most of these hulls were built inboard/outboard or jet). The boat overall was in pretty good shape, but had been neglected for a while.
I started redoing the wiring since it was a disaster, and just doing general cleanup. I buffed out all the scratches, cleaned it all, and will be redoing the flooring and have the seats redone this winter.
Once I got the engine running well and a decent prop installed, I got her up to 55mph on GPS and was quite happy. My girlfriend on the other hand was envious of our neighbors boat since it had a windshield. So my first major undertaking was the retrofit of a windshield.
Here she is without
I found a windshield on craigslist that looked like I could make it work. It was $75 for the windshield and about $20 in hardware. I still need to do the finished mounts and fiberglass cover to tie it onto the boat, but here she is now.
It actually works really well. I will paint the frame satin black and the fiberglass will be gelcoated white to match the boat. Now I need to get the rest of my gauges and redo the dash. Still not sure what to do for seats, but I have a few ideas. I am also trying to find a good aluminum side mount control to replace the OE plastic one and might replace the steering wheel, too. I also still need to do a stereo, but that will likely be next.
Me and the lady hanging out.
I don't fish or ski, I just love being on the water and really like to go fast. The boat is not unlike my car in that your ass is 8" off the ground and is one of the faster boats on the water.
Welcome to the site. I'm sure you've found the outboard forum already. If you have the need for speed or just simply like going fast, stay away from the Outboard Church, they are a great bunch and that going fast stuff can be contagious and sweep you away.
