    Really no need for an advance in a jet boat. Set it and forget it. Better idle, better throttle response.

    There's your answer. Put the Vic Jr on it and my guess is you'll need way less timing. I'm thinking that much timing is a bandaid for a really ineffecient combustion ie: single four on a TR.

    No vac advance, mech only when I took it from 50+ down to 35* i lost 400 r's. when I took it back to 40* I got about half of that back. Not sure what you mean by the jetting thing, I assume you mean lean it out some. As far as altitude I boat @ 4500-6500 ft. I have a vic jr sittin in a box, right now I don'd dare lean it out much because my single 4 tr burns 5 and 7 leaner than the rest. So I end up jetting 5 or 6 holes too rich to keep the other in the ballpark.

    What altitude are you at? Maybe you would be better correcting jetting instead of putting that much timing in it?

    I think you are "ear setting" the timing. They all sound like winners in the driveway....on a trailer unloaded. When the motor is loaded it is a different story.
    The 427 will like 40 degrees...if you have the fuel. If not..dial back 36 to 38. I have no experience mixing gas so I don't know what you can get away with.

    timing help

    Why when I "power" time my engine I have way too much advance (50*)ish when i back it down to 40* it runs well but not as good as when it's cranked up. most people tell me 40* is way too much. I know everyone is going to say check your timing mark, I did and it's within a couple of degrees. wtf ? I think it's a combo of high altitude, maybe too much octaine (can't quite run on pump gas 427bbc 11.6 to 1) so I run half 110 and half pump gas, open chamber heads(broxix bb2+heads ) . I guess what my question is should I power time it or listen to the light?
