    Mine idles alot better locked than not. I think the theory or thought behind locking them in a jet ,is that the boat is going to spend the majority of it's time above 2500 r's so why worry about the curve under 2500 r's.

    Who locks them out the factory?

    could this be why i have to warm my motor up before it will idle on its own? I'm thinking of going with a regular dizzy.

    are you setting the timing at idle or revved up?
    if it is "locked out" your timing will not change no matter what the rpm.

    who told you it was locked out? clearly from mallory they are indicating it is not "locked out" it has built in mechanical advance. someone would have had to take the dist. apart to "lock out" the mechanical advance that mallory built into it.

    so if you got this new then it is not "locked out" it has built in mechanical advance. if you bought it used and someone else "locked it out" i would definitely check it before setting the timing to 32,34,36 (whatever you want it to be) thinking it has been locked out because if you set it at idle and it is not locked out, then you could have a bad situation on your hands.

    easiest thing to do is toss a timing light on there. set it to 8-10 degrees at idle then give it some throttle and watch the timing mark. if it doesn't move at all with any kind of rpm then its locked out and you will need to set the timing to full advance and it will stay there all the time. if it does move then rev it up to 3500 or so (all advance should be in by then no problem) then set for full advance and your done

    Thanks everyone.

    I was just wanting to check, last time i took her out she ran like shit below 3K and great above 3K that was at 38*

    Since then i have checked a few things and set the timing at 34* ( starts easier)

    Also found out i was running 10 psi on fuel, valves were not adjusted correctly, checked the floats and when i pulled the sight plugs fuel ran out like it was a garden hose...

    So now i have the timing set at 34*
    Floats are adjusted.
    4 corner idle is adjusted ( on the rich side ) for now.
    Valves are adjusted.
    fuel reg is dropped to 7 psi.

    On vacation next week and hoping to get her wet for some more testing..

    I think she is getting close

    Dont worry about the initial timing, set the timing with the engine running and rev it up while watching the timing light. when the timing stops advancing (normally around 3500 rpm) set the timing at the full advance you want (say 36). when it idles back down check it again and the diff will be the amount of mechanical advance.

    I dont know if im getting your question right here but here goes, It doesnt matter what the dizzy has in it for advance because you will be locking it out meaning you will be screwing down the advance plate in the dizzy so it wont move then you stab the dizzy in the motor and set it at about 34* or whereever you want it to run at and thats called locking out the timing.it wont move from that mark it will idle and wot at the same timing that you set it at. it may be hard to start and you may want to put a kill switch on the thing so you can spin it over with the key and get it rotating then flip the ignition on to get it to fire. that will save you from breaking starters.

    If the distributor is "locked out" you have exactly ZERO degrees of advance in the distributor. That is the definition of locked out. Set the timing at idle at the amount you want, i.e. 36*. That will be your timing at all rpms.
