    Question 1970 OMC electric shift problem

    My electric shift stopped working & I have no idea where to start. I have a complete spare complete engine & lower unit that I know works. When I switched lower units, same thing. Any ideas? It's gotta be an electric problem!!! Mel

    can you power up the coils manually the problem may be in the shifter

    I just sold a 77 model a couple months ago (last year for the elec shift), and the only problem I ever had with it was the shift wires in the ourdrive had to be replaced due to the insulation rotting off. I re-sealed the complete lower unit while I had it apart.

    Usually you will loose either forward or reverse and not both. If you are certain it's not just a blown fuse. Start by unplugging the shift wires (just inside the transom) and run a hot wire to each wire individually (as bart recommended) to see if it will shift into forward or reverse (you will be able to hear it click to engage without having it running). One wire is for the forward coil and the other for reverse. Also make sure the lower unit is grounded (seems like there is a ground strap connecting the lower to the upper) If it still doesn't shift into forward or reverse then it can be the wires south of there which travel all the way down inside the prop housing. It could also be the shift coil(s) in the prop housing, but the chances of both of them failing at once is slim to none. You can download a PDF file of the OMC service manual over at iboats, or buy it on ebay for about $5.00 from several sellers on eBay. The service manual is very handy to have. The service manual will give you steps for testing the shift coils etc with an ohm meter. If you don't want to buy the service manual, then I suggest you take it to a boat shop and let them bend you over... because they hate OMC's for some reason.

    Make sure you have a good ground also, many people think you can just throw away the bonding cables on the hinge caps, they really need to be there.

    Good luck...And it's not that shops hate OMC's, they just simply don't exist anymore and they are way more trouble than they are worth in many cases....

    Used to get people come in that just bought an OMC powered boat on the cheap and thought they could get it working like a new one for a few hundred bucks.....Those are the people that soured shops willingness to work on them, well, that and the fact that finding parts for them is an art form.

    Default next problem !!!!!

    Thanks guys, with all your help, I'm very close. My next problem is that when I crank over the motor, I loose power to the transmission!!!! With a little more help I might still get out this year !!! Mel
