    Default Engine upgrade...

How tough would it be to go from a 350 mercruiser to a 496 mercruiser as far as motor mounts and line-up to the transom? Just curious and thanks

Default Those parts should be bolt-up easy.

Engine mounts and trans. bolt patterns are the same.

    Now, for the hard parts.

    Will the drive take it?
    New exhaust setup.
Will the boat's handling like the extra weight?
Will the length fwd and upward be too much to fit?

I'll have to look into the last 2 items on the list. It's a 21' Schiada RC stern drive that I'm updating to a bravo set-up. I don't think the weight will be as big a concern as revamping the interior and losing space.
    Thanks!

The Bravo drive is tough enough. Plenty strong.

496? Its a completely different motor in every aspect, dimensions, power, parts, ecu, just keep that in mind and good luck, you'll need it.

Well, yes, if it is a newer boat, the entire fuel induction/injection system needs changed.
I was kind of ASSuming a fuel system change along with the engine.

Typically when someone repowers a Mercruiser package from a small block to a big block the new engine will basically be "ready to run" from the bellhousing to the fuel injection. Smokin is right, the exhaust tips will not line up and the engine will be wider, longer, and taller. Other than that it will bolt in. The wire loom will plug in, etc.
My biggest concern is that chances are he has an Alpha drive.

My biggest concern was an Alpha drive as well. He says he has a Bravo, I hope he's right. Alphas and 496's don 't often get along well, for long.

Not to mention they're being discontinued.

    Default definitely a bravo.....

I'm upgrading from a pre-alpha to a bravo and was considering picking up a pull-out 496 instead of building my small block to a 383. I don't have thru transom exhaust now, but am going to be installing thru transom with full time mufflers. The 496 in question isn't the HO, just the magnum. In all honesty, I haven't done much homework on these engines, but thanks for all the input, because now I will crack open the books and finally decide what to do. Thanks again for all the input

Get obnoxious to build you a 500hp motor for your Bravo and call it a day.

    Hey Barry,

Since he is already set up with the SB, wouldn't it be better to stay with it and increase it's power? It would stay light and a lot less conversion problems.
