    Default Another prop question ?

I have a Hallett 270, 2-step bottom, that I recently added some horsepower to..
I now hops and porpoises real bad at around 80 to 90 mph ...I am currently running a 30p 4 blade Bravo 1 , my question is : would a five blade cure this problem ? and if so , what pitch should I use ...

I did call Hallett and they suggested a five blade might work better....I can turn the the 30P to 6000 rpm if I want to ...I'd like to be more sure before I commit myself the expenditure for the 5 blade...Teague will be my next inquisition ...

I am having some some great experience with the Hydromotive props. They have both 4 and 5 blade props. They come in either tail lifting or bow lifting(X series). I have gotten beter performance compared to the Mercs with stock out of the box props from them. The 5 blades also do not have as big a diffuser ring like on the Merc Maximus. They also have a 30 day return policy and in my opinion the workmanship on their props are better than Merc. Call Tom their and tell him Mike Brambilla referred you. 330-425-4266. Hope this helps.

    Dear Hallett Boy:

You need to provide more information horsepower, tabs, any drive changes etc...

V-Bottoms normally walk or chine not hop or porpoise these are primarily cat tendencies.

Given the limited information this leads me to believe it is not a prop problem just yet. I think your either improperly trimed/tabbed or the X-dimension on the drive is to high for those speeds 80-90 MPH. Additional information is needed to diagnose your problem ie...what speeds were you at before the increase in HP etc...

A lot of variables come into play so it's process of elimination based on information provided by you. Plus, dropping some big bucks on props can be costly and not solve anything.

    Sincerely,

    KAP

KAP, Thanks for the reply. The boat has run 96 mph @ 6200 rpm with a 30p
Bravo 1, the slip at that speed calculates to over 15%...I'm wondering if the boat is rising too far out of the water for a 4 blade to work properly ???Acording
to Hallet, the X is where they say my hull runs best, and I can find no hook or
    rocker...

    Well do you have tabs?

    Did you change the drive?

Where is the trim at on your indicator? Does moving it decrease the ill handling issues or exacerbate them?

Eliminate each variable and test the boat until you can isolate the cause once the cause is determined the fix is relatively simple---but may not be inexpensive.

I'm just trying to help and interested as to your solution--- so keep us posted.

    Very truly yours,

    KAP

    Thumbs up

Not sure if you've solved your prop issues yet, but one suggestion would be to work with a company like Throttle-Up in FL. For a small deposit, they will send you props, take data, and work with you until you find the one that works on your boat. When you find the right one, you buy it. All you pay for in the mean time is shipping. They are quite knowledgeable, have a large inventory of props to try, and can help you zero in on the right setup quickly.

Another good resource is Kevin at R&R Prop Shop in Henderson, NV. He is very, very knowledgeable, way helpful, and a really good guy. He can take a destroyed, twisted chunk of s/s and turn it back into a thing of beauty, a better prop than Mercury ever created in the first place. Of course I'm not speaking from personal experience here...

Good luck with your tuning. Sounds like you have a good runnning Hallet.
