Default Cobra stern drive with shift problem

I have an 1987 OMC Cobra stern drive with a 5.7L that will not shift back to neutral the first time when put in water. After I get it in neutral it will shift fine the rest of the day. Any ideas what might be the problem. Thanks

What color is the shift cable going to the outdrive?

    Default shifting

almost sounds like the shift interrupt switch may be bad or starting to go bad since
it does not happen all the time
the other thing is that the shift cable to the drive has started to stretch a little
there is also some minor adjustments that can be made
but I would take it to a omc dealer for doing the adjustments
