    Default Hydraulic steering question.

When looking at pics of boats with external hydraulic steering I've noticed most with 2 cylinders but some with only one.

Is 2 better than one? But is one still batter than a cable?

    Thanks

My Eliminator came with dual rams, but not full hydraulic, it was a partial add on. When I had to remove my interior panels for another issue, I converted to full hyd., great move. I would say one is better than stock, two is the ticket. The stock push/pull type steering is not recommended for large or fast boats, and full hyd. is much better than the add on type where you still have the push/pull cable going to the control valve on the drive.

Ya know. I just assumed that all hydraulic systems included the helm with hoses all the way to the back. That's definitely something to watch for.

I thought that too when I bought the boat, those cable racks have a bit of play that gets worse with usage, and there is no adjustment. I believe a full hyd. system is about double the cost of an add on.

So you got me thinking. I was looking at an add for an Eliminator 250 Eagle. The picture of the drive from the back shows dual rams. But in the picture of the engine compartment I can see both control cables and the steering cable.

I wonder if you can upgrade the helm on a deal like that and save a few $$$$?

I think you are confusing the hoses for cables in the pic your seeing. Your describing a typical add on. To change over you'll need to run a pressure hose from the pump through a filter to a hyd. helm control, two pressure hoses run from helm to rams, and a return hose back to the hyd. reservoir. Check out IMCO, that's where I bought my conversion kit, all the parts included.
