I have a 1984 Webbcraft Dynasty with an old Mercruiser outdrive, I do not know what they call the outdrive I have, but it is the one before the Alpha. The boat has an odd noise when I started it for the first time this year. I think it may be the gimbal bearing going bad, but I am not sure. I am also deaf in one ear, so I can't really tell where the sound is coming from. I did listen to the engine while it was running with a mechanic stethoscope and it appears the rattle is not from the engine, alt, power steering, or water pump. How can I find out if it is the gimbal bearing?
The other question I have, is there is a grease zert at the top of the outdrive on the outside of the transom, does this zert grease the gimbal bearing? It looks like it is too far away from the bearing to be the correct one. If this is not the correct zert for the gimbal bearing, is there a way to grease a gimbal bearing without pulling it out?
Can anyone tell me if this is an Alpha outdrive? I was under the assumption that it was a pre-Alpha, but after some investigation, I think it may be an Alpha, but it does not have any identifying stickers or numbers that show up in the Mercruiser parts searches.
I did find a grease zert on the side of the housing that looks like it should be for the gimbal bearing, I greased it, but it still has the rattle. Looks like I may need to pull the drive off the boat for some further investigation.
Sorry for the sideways photo, it was posted from my cell phone.
How should I move forward with diagnosing what is causing this noise? I know a little about 4 wheel vehicles, but on trying to find this noise has me stumped? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I would really like to get this fixed so I can hit the lake
