Default 1980 Volvo Penta 280 question

Guys, I'm looking at a 1980 Caribbean daycruiser with a 280 volvo penta (350ci motor). My dad had one of these on a 1979 boat that was similar and he had a lot of problems with it. The towing brace was a pain to get placed, and we always had issues with the whole tilt unit assembly. It was a terrible design. So here are my questions:
    1. What newer model VP outdrive would be a good replacement? What kind of $ are we talking about? I'm assuming this would be piston driven for raising the unit, yes?
    2. I've owned one other boat and it had a 350/Alpha combo. I liked that mercruiser setup way more than the VP. Not a totally fair comparison as mine was a 1993, so much newer. The question is, could I swap out the VP for a Alpha or Bravo1? Would this be stupid expensive and just not worth it?

    Thanks for the help.

I think you answered you own question.

Wouldn't be worth $'s invested to improve a bad design. Maybe if someone gave you the boat, then you could through some dollars at it. But even then, it would be wiser to just purchase turnkey boat with no known weaknesses.

Thanks David. I assumed that would be the case with the Merc changeover. How about #1... is there a better VP drive I should be considering?
