On my drive I have used both Royal Purple 75-90, and Mercury's own brand of gear oil. I have a magnetic drain plug in the lower drain hole and it has never shown any excessive wear at 600+ hours. I think any well known gear lube that meets the requirements for use in an outdrive will work, is one better than the rest, who can say? I also use RP 75-90 in the Casale V-drive in my Cole, cruising at 2500 RPM, and NO water cooling, the box stays comfortably cool enough to touch without burning.

I don't run a merc but an old king cobra and I use Redline heavy shockproof and it looked new after a whole season with no metal.

Please explain your comment on Mercury gear lube. Mercruiser warrants their outdrives so why would they use and sell a lube of dubious quality?

Because it will work just long enough to get past warranty? I can't say that it's junk, but that could be one reason. Better question is, do the rest of the mentioned do a better job , their cost is crazy.
