So we have a 1977 GM Ranger runabout. Cleaned it up and took it out for the first time sence buying it. Runs great. But. At first it shifted into forward just fine. But after running it for about a half hour, it started not shifting into reverse from neutral until half way to WOT. Then wouldnt shift into forward until half way to WOT. Desided to get it off the water until we got it figured out and heading back to dock, it wouldn't shift out of forward. Then again in reverse after I circled a couple times trying to get it to work. Ended up having to get it close then "coast" in to the dock with it shut down.
Anybody have any idea on what could be causeing the shift issues? Or anything to look at?
It sounds like your shift linkage near the interrupt switch is not tight. With the outdrive shifted into forward, the propeller shouldn't spin in the reverse direction, but should "ratchet" in the forward direction. In reverse, the opposite should be true. There is a brass adjustment that can be used to bias the shifter cable to the outdrive more towards forward or reverse.
